Default Low Performance on great computer.

    Hello there,

I decided to install Rome Total War again on my computer and I found it slowing down when zooming out in battles with two full armies. It's not too bad, but it is strange for a computer like mine.

My graphic options are all highest (scale is 'huge') with a resolution of 1680x1050.

    My System:

    Intel Core2Quad 6600 (4x2.4 Ghz)
    4 GB Ram
    Geforce 8800 GTS 512
    Windows Vista 64 Bits

Could it be because of a lack of multicore support or is there possibly some other issue?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Even one of those cores is powerful enough to run RTW well, that can't be the problem. Are you running anything in the background?

Well, your computer's system specifications are good.

Have you tried turning off the Detailed Unit Shadows? You will see a huge change in performance, and notice only minor changes in the graphics quality.

Ok, I am sorry to say I have made a bit of a mistake. It turns out that somehow my torrent program was running without a system tray icon. I guess it was eating up memory or something and RTW is much better now. Thanks for the background thing though, I hadn't thought of that yet stupidly enough...

Also, I tried lowering ll kinds of options but it did not make any difference so I guess the torrent thing really was the culprit.

(Still though MIITW is still a bit choppy...)

Always have a good look at what is running in the background of your system - it's amazing how many services are left active by various applications. I used to run msconfig and then look up what each service did (on-line) before disabling it. I was told about Advanced Windows Care Personal by Lestat over at the RTR forums and have been using it ever since. It's free for personal use: http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindows...l?Str=download

I have always had exactly the same problem my pc is stripped down fro gaming every non essential service is off every start-up prog i don't need is off all components I don't need have been uninstalled. I defragment and spyware scan weekly and virus check every two weeks I have no spyware or viruses I use virtually no ram at the desktop. I can max other games with no problems and for some reasons till STILL lags over 2.5k soldiers. IT IS NOT peoples computers its incredibly sloppy coding. People shouldn't have to turn down settings for an old game when new ones can be maxed easily.I haven't seen optimisation as bad as this in any other game besides halo 2 and something needs to be done. I know what I am doing with pcs and its not my pc that's the problem. I also update my drivers constantly checking for them every two weeks or so i update all my programs when a new version is available using filehippos update notifier. This pc shoudl shine compared to how many people take care of their computers Its not the problem rtw is.

Then, would it be fair to say that you consider your computer too new for this game? It sounds like a rant to me.

No it would be fair to say that ca did a lousy job optimising it and asking people with good pcs to turn off settings just to get a decent frame rate on an old game is crap. If a good pc like mine cant get a decent fps something is up.
