    Default NVIDIA PhysX

I see Firingsquad refer to confirmation from NVIDIA that Empire will support PhysX. For many of us planning computer upgrades to play Empire that will make the decision harder given the competitiveness of the ATI 4850 and 4870. Or maybe it makes the decision easier given the performance increases when Physx is enabled as reported in the article.

I'm not up to speed on this stuff. Last I heard (maybe a year ago) physics cards were an extra. Is NVIDIA integrating the physics card architecture into their graphics cards?

Nvidia bought out Ageia who made the original physx cards. Appararently all of their dx10 cards (so 8000 series and newer) are made capable of generating the same effect. A driver update set for release on the 12th will 'unlock' the physx ability of these nvidia cards for games that support it. And Empire is supposedly one such game in development.

It's all explained quite well here: http://www.guru3d.com/article/physx-by-nvidia-review/

SLI GTX280? That's like 1000 dollars at retail price, or are getting them somehow cheaper?

The prices recently dropped by around $20-30 on the GTX280s thanks to stiff competition from the 4870.

I bought this for $500+ only 2 weeks ago. Now its down $30 thanks to rebates. I can't wait till winter rolls around and hopefully the prices on these babies will really go down thanks to a resurgent ATI market.

The 8800GT must be one of the best "bang for the buck" cards I've ever had. I went from an old Radeon 9200 to it and I was blown away by it. It was a much bigger improvement moving to it than then moving on to the GTX280. I love my GTX280 but it was a clear case of diminishing returns.

Dude.. I went from a 7 year old PC with an AGP socket and Pentium 4 with a very crap Radeon card + 2GB of ValueRam to the GTX280 + Quad Core + nforce 790i + 4GB DDR3 RAM. Imagine how I feel. In fact I can't feel, I'm numb. All I see is the silky smooth figure of Altair and the detailed tiles of Damascus from 1 mile away, the reassuring machismo on the face of my comrade Ghaz and Price and every detail and crevice of Wrex the Krogan's amphibian skin.
