Can't start a new campaign??

I've got vanilla MTW2, completely unpacked, no mods, but some slight modification to export_desc_unit.txt, export_desc_character_traits, and export_VnVs. I don't think I modified desc_strat. This is also a fresh install.

I've found that I can load savegames, enter other menus, but whenever I try to start a new grand campaign, I get the message "please select from the menu items" popping up and nothing else happens. It doesn't crash, it just seems like the button for "grand campaign" doesn't work or something.

Did you do the tutorial first?

The option should be greyed out if I haven't, right? I'll feel awfully stupid if that solves it...

Ok, I just tried it, and I can't do the tutorial either. I can do custom battles, historical battles, and I can load saved games (that I have from using the regular .exe rather than the mymod batch file).

Did you try modding the game before in Program Files? that screwed up Rome for mw.

Really? I didn't think that was as much of an issue with RTW, but i might have. Maybe I'll try re-unpacking the modded data files.

ok.... i'm not the best at command-line operation. what's wrong with this string? the file won't extract...

"unpacker --source=..\packs\*.pack --destination=c:\packs\ --filter="descr_strat.txt""

The reason is that descr_strat is not in the packed files...the copy used by the game is the one and only copy of that file. You can either reinstall, or have someone look at it and tell you what's wrong.

If you did mod the descr_strat then the source of the problem is quite clear.
If you haven't backed the file up before you modded, the solutions are also clear:
A. Pray that you remember what you changed
B. Sacrifice a chicken before you open the system log - the error might be described in there
C. Give up, re-install the game and put a sign next to your monitor: I will back up my files.
