Hello and welcome to the forums.
There is a simple rule for TW games. Do NEVER play them vanilla unless there are mods out. I suggest playing Stainless Steel, you found it in the mod section. The battle AI is impressive, havent found any mod comparable. The campaign AI is also better - but its a bit peace like.
If you roam around the mod forum you will also found the AI used for Stainless Steel as "standalone" download.
But what ever you do - dont play with unmoded AI.
Well I looked through all the mods, and honestly, I would like them all combined... Like a really really historical accurate one... really really accurate? )))

if you go for historical accuracy you completly throw off the campaign map and game mechanics, stainless steel is the best out there but if you want a eastern mod go with broken cresent

Can't i like get two at a time?? )))))

It's not so simple actually. The mods you find in the mod section are primarily overhaul type mods. Everyone has a different interpretation of balance and how the AI behaves so combining any two mod will likely take some elbow grease on your part. You can easily, however, install one such overhaul mod then many mini mods that change smaller feature such as effects, skins, etc.
Road to Jerusalem is a mod that does a little bit of everything, combines some mods and some skins. Haven't used it personally, so I'm just going on the author's description.
Currently, I'm using Ultimate AI and combined with various skins and effects mods I've found in the M2TW mod section.

For AI improvements over the vanilla map, go for Lands to Conquer. SSteel sounds nice but it's HUGE to download.
Sure, there are a couple that stand out to me, although I bet many of the mods here have AI enhancements in some form:
Ultimate AI ~ by GrandViZ
Darthmod ~ by Darth Vader
Just a bit turned off by Dathmod because of the custom load screens featuring Darth Vader everywhere. It's an easy fix, just delete the load screen folders and the game will load the default ones. I eventually might just merge parts of Darth's mod with UAI as I like aspects from both.

For a mod newbie like my self, nice thread.
Is it possible to merge the UAI mod with other mods?
sry to budge in...but i have downloaded SS 4.0 and i just cant get it to work. there is no deskptop icon / its not in the medieval 2 folder (i made sure it was in the correct directory when i installed) and when i go to the SS folder the only option is to un-install
do i need patch 4.1 to play or something?
(and i dont have kingdoms)

So you're saying the "AI" in "Ultimate AI" stands for "Artificial Intelligence" instead of "Artificial Idiot"?
Jon had taken Donal and Benjens advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

I have a question about lusted campaign ai mod, which one is newer:15.9 kb or that 16.6 kb???
Is there any mod that improves the AI on both the battlefield and (especially) campaign map withouting the visual units or their stats? Just noticed that my rep with every faction just decreased with every faction for no appareant reason when i went VH. And on normal the AI just chill all the time and dont go to war or take rebel settlements and just generally suck.
Any ideas?
You have a certain mentality, a "you vs them" and i know it is hard to see, but it is only your imagination which makes up enemies everywhere. I haven't professed anything but being neutral so why Do you feel the need to defend yourself from me?. Truly What are you defending? when there is nobody attacking?
The only modifications that pop into my mind are total conversions like Stainless Steel to be honest. But in fact the reason for that is that those are the only modifications I cared enough to research on back in the day... Maybe Retrofit mod. However I doubt it changes the AI.

Ask in ReallyBadAI forum if you want a challenging AI as i'm sure G5 must've a download for vanilla v1.2.
I'll chip in a few words.
1. Diplomacy in VH is harder on you, you lose reputation much faster in VH. It's part of the idea. I do not know if any mods fix that and which.
2. Playing in a historical way is difficult, especially in battles, because there is mainly a single AI formation, the so-called triple line (missile units in front followed by two lines of melee infantry - with cavalry on the flanks). Many praise the SS AI, but what it really does is make it harder for you to win by making the AI behave even more in an "arcade" fashion. For example, in a historical battle maintaining communications between officers on the battlefield was a hugely difficult task. Nor could the general give orders that could be instantly carried out. Rather a lot depended on the troops and their officers being trained, drilled and briefed BEFORE the battle. Once the battle had started, only a few things could the generals do to influence the outcome of the battle. This is explained in Byzantine tactical manuals, for example, it does not come out of my head. So interfering with what your units do is already unhistorical. Also seeing the AI scattering its forces on the battlefield trying to outflank you, as the SS AI usually does, would have not have happened in reality. There had to be a continuous line of a certain depth and with certain discipline. If the army was scattered, and units were no longer next to each other, armies disintegrated. But it is equally unhistorical micromanaging your own armies to try to beat a clever AI. Of course for gaming, a trickier AI is more fun.
