If I'm a far western European faction and I want to give up my possessions in the Levant after a crusade or two, what I usually do is give all my settlements there to the Papals and launch an armada back to the mother country with all my agents and armies from out East. So one time they did a crusade on Iconium, after I had already taken Antioch and Jerusalem on previous crusades. (I had also taken Gaza, Damascus, Acre, Aleppo and Adana, so I spammed troops and ships from all of those.) Iconium falls no contest, so I get all my armies moved out and gift all seven of those and Iconium to the Papal States. About ten turns later, I see a message that the Turks have been eliminated, so I use toggle_fow to see what the hell happened.
The Papal States had taken all of Anatolia, a lot of Egypt's land, and had started to move into Byzantine territory. In fact, the Pope himself was sieging Constantinople at that moment, and one turn remained until surrender without a reinforcement in sight.
So apparantly, when given an empire, the Papal States kicks ass...
