Enslave or Exterminate, that is the question?

When you are a Roman, do you lean to Sacking or exterminating Barbarian settlements? In Vanilla I generally would Sack most settlements, could not bring myself to exterminate them, although on one occasion I got so cross with the AI, due to a high level of Casualties I exterminated a City?

If you're looking to play historically, occupying and, to a lesser extent, enslaving would be vastly more common.

Only two cities were exterminated by Romans.

Yes but unfortunetly in Iberia the town with 400 ppl can somehow revolt against the 2000 man legion parked inside.

i allways exterminate, it gives you more money and when you will keep the city extermination prevents the people to start a rebellion (ore at least it will take some time befor thy rebel on you)

I do mean enslave, beg your pardon, got a bit confused as being playing SS too, where it is Sack and Kingdoms Apachean where it is raid. I generally tend to enslave, although I believe the Romans exterminated parts of Gaul, a genocide really. Do you adpot the same attitude when you capture Greek, Macedonian and Seleucid settlements?

i usually enslave a settlement, i might not generate as much money on the short terms, but it will on the long terms. especially if you play the 6.4 version/patch at which lt added more value to slaves.

when you're at a distant front, it's always usefull to have enough manpower in that area to replenish your auxiliary legions or town watch to keep order. otherwise reinforcements have to come from further away, which buys the enemy time.

i only exterminate in difficult regions (iberia, middle east) or when a city keeps rebelling, i move out that city, retake it and kill anything alive in it.

but if you need money fast, you can exterminate, but i think exterminating costs more than you think (construct buildings that encourage repopulation, recruiting extra town watch because it takes longer to upgrade,...) and enslavement might not look better at the beginning, but it pays off later: 20 turns of slavery cash coming in, upgrades will go faster so extra town watch can be disbanded after a few turns (= less expenditure) and always enough manpower to refill the ranks.

if you enslave to much you will get a culture penalty and when your city' s grow to fast thy will start to get unhappy.

My opinion - be sure to ALWAYS exterminate, except little exceptions (like Rome or cities near to your capital, where the danger of rebellion is not that high, then enslave). In my campaign is year 179 BC, I have like 80 provinces and even though I DID exterminate almost all settlements, I have ENORMOUS problems with happiness. So my advice is - its not historically accurate, but since this is game and it works differently, KILL THEM ALL. It will buy you some time to build happiness improving buildings and counter the growing unhappiness due to the fgrowing population in the more distant cities. The squalor there is HUGE.

BTW, another little advice - in more distant cities, counter unhappiness rather with garrison units (cheapest ones, town watch and later urban cohorts). In those nearer to your capital, use rather games and races. I have the best experience with this concenring your budget (and believe me, Ive spent hours trying to balance it to avoid money leaks)...

in my expeiriance exterminating is bad. cuz if settlement dont have much ppl but its still rebeling i exterminated once and i couldnt train any units there... same happened in taras ^.^

haa yes enslavement should be good it brings extra money in your treasure, but also overpopulation this will bring riots, culture penalty and so on.

so i always exterminate.
