normalmapping... it will rock your socks!

now imagine all the SS 6.1 troops with that kind of detailed look...

(and its only normalmapping so it wont give a huge performance hit)

It's done with a 3D modelling program called Z-brush. It's a very high-end 3D program that is used by a lot of professionals. It's more of a 3D sculpting program than modelling though. Because the normal maps produced by Z-brush are of a much, much higher quality than the ones you get with the nvidia plugin for Photoshop, you end up with fantastic results like this. However, it would be very, very, very time consuming to do this for every unit in the game.

It's actually not as time consuming as you would think. When you get to grips with a sculpting package like zbrush or mudbox, its very easy to bang out detailed models in little time
