    Default Pope Changing Nationality???

    Is this a known bug?

I decided to play a campaign as Denmark with strict house rules to see if I could complete the objectives while maintaining best possible relations with the vatican and the best possible reputation. I successfully stacked the College of Cardinals and the last three popes have all been Danish.

Except that the current one not only changed his name but also his nationality (see pic - apologies for thumbnail, haven't worked out how to post a full size pic yet).

    Attachment 16278

Thing is England have spent the entire campaign destablising Bruges with better spies than I've been able to produce but would not attack no matter what the provocation. Obviously I couldn't attack them as a neutral faction without damaging my rep. They've also spent most of the game at war with Scotland and Spain, constantly being excommunicated. Now, with Scotland destroyed and a truce with Spain they feel free to throw everything at Bruges from their now Citadel at Caens.

Their pet Pope (achieved I might add without having a single Cardinal at the last election) means that despite mounting several seiges they now have the best relationship with the vatican than at any time in the entire campaign so I can't get a free hand to attack Caens.

    aehm...

the pope is elected from the college of cardinals (in game as well as for real). once there is a need for a new pope (i.e. the old one died, happens sometimes, luckily not too often, just once per life, in Game and for real) the college of cardinals come together and vote for a new one from within their ranks.

as the cardinals have a nationality, so does your new pope.

if you have a danish cardinal and he gets voted for you will have a pope of denmark.

and new name?! in western and eastern cultures alike everyone gets a individual name, so a new pope, who is a different person than the last pope who is dead of course has a new and different name.

if you have brothers and sisters in your family, or uncles, aunts or cousins, you will find out that they have individual names too, the main reason is that if your mother calls you that not all of them respond with "HAEH!? WASSUP?!"

if you have your nickname chosen because of the side effects of what you smoke, stop it for a while a least

    Sorry, I obviously wasn't clear.

He was a Danish cardinal (can't remember his name - I didn't arrange a pre-election screenshot) - his election was no surprise as between us my five cardinals and my allies' three meant we owned the college. But on election he changed his name to "Pope Gaitanus of England" and definitely favours the English faction.

You were quite obviously clear, I don't know what Samir has been smoking.

It must be a bug, as I can not see a single reason for this to happen. Unless, of course, you own an English city and the cardinal came from that city. It's a possibility, but doesn't explain the name change.

You must've done something that makes him like the english faction more than his home faction maybe the English bribed him :hmmm:

He who wishes to command must know what it's like to obey.

    The name always changes...

Once Sicily got a Pope (in my game) and it changed from something like Bobangilious to Frodogerious.

On a second reading I think I get Samir's point. Just because the name game gave him the arbitrary name "...of England" doesn't mean he changed nationality. Makes sense (at least put like that it does ).

Guess the sudden improvement in England's 'holiness' is down to their sucking up - certainly it's on the downward slide now due to their constant attacks on Bruges but it's slooooow!! At this rate I'm gonna run out of turns and money before they get excomunicated and I can grab Caen.

You've got enough cities to snag Caens without getting excommunicated (If you have siege weapons)
