Is this a known bug?
I decided to play a campaign as Denmark with strict house rules to see if I could complete the objectives while maintaining best possible relations with the vatican and the best possible reputation. I successfully stacked the College of Cardinals and the last three popes have all been Danish.
Except that the current one not only changed his name but also his nationality (see pic - apologies for thumbnail, haven't worked out how to post a full size pic yet).

Thing is England have spent the entire campaign destablising Bruges with better spies than I've been able to produce but would not attack no matter what the provocation. Obviously I couldn't attack them as a neutral faction without damaging my rep. They've also spent most of the game at war with Scotland and Spain, constantly being excommunicated. Now, with Scotland destroyed and a truce with Spain they feel free to throw everything at Bruges from their now Citadel at Caens.
Their pet Pope (achieved I might add without having a single Cardinal at the last election) means that despite mounting several seiges they now have the best relationship with the vatican than at any time in the entire campaign so I can't get a free hand to attack Caens.![]()
