Default [Dead] Alagaesia: Total War Mod!

Alagaesia plans to become the ultimate Rome Total War modification by adding units that some thought would never exist. Prepare yourself commander because this is not a war where battle shall only be fought on land or even sea... but now also in the air. Using models made by multiple modellers. We try our best to give you the greatest battles.

Alagaesia: Total War is set two hundred years after the books and currently features 17 factions, including the never before seen Imperial Legion Of Dragons, Kirtan and Ceris Monks and more. It is said that one being shall unite the lands. How this great warrior is to do it is not known but the call of the dragons has been heard throughout the region. Leaders sit on the edge of their thrones awaiting for their enemies next move.

The Imperial Legion Of Dragons have returned from their one thousand year flight. They left the Hadarac Desert with an Empire, They come back one thousand years later to find the lands seperated once more just like before King Drugal and his great purge. After witnessing for many months how the dragon riders miss use their dragons for war they became hostile to all dragon users. claiming that riders are abusing the rights of dragons. Monks of Kirtan and Ceris are both at war with one another claiming that there rivalry must be settled once and for all. The Brotherhood Of Orthiad is attempting to destroy there own kingdom and defy their king. Civil war has broken out between the Elves... the High Elves have found the Dark Elves tresspassing on their territory... even worse a new kind of murdurous creature have been rumoured to be lurking inside the deep woodlands. The newly recovered Empire seem even more desperate to rule the land now that the Elves are preoccupied with their war so they're soldiers march for Varden and Surda. Desperate to defeat all dragon riders the Legion Of Dragons have resurrected an older and wiser leader. Now King Doroxian Drugal has betrayed his people and decided that dragons and the Legion Of Dragons have become posioned... now he wishes to start anew. Can the Legion Of Dragons defeat the immortal King Drugal on their own? Will they ally with others? Or will it be too late for them already? One thing is certain. King Drugal is busy inside his stronghold developing an army too weak to fight as of yet. If he returns with even half his power all of Alagaesia will know his wrath. With his newest undead army King Drugal plans on cutting through anyone who stands in his way. It would seem as if the most intense battles will be on the edges of the Hadarac Desert.

Races will fight, Armies will fight, Leaders will fight, Men will fight, even... children... will fight. Sometimes All They Need Is A Leader.

    War, Death, Plague, Famine, Discovery Will All Come From This Very Region;

Before you get to far you need to secure Copyrights from Christopher Paolini and Anne Mcafery. Algaesia is her creation (dragon riders of Pern series) Paolini just added on to it. Overall very nice idea. I am already in one to many mods so when I am done moddeling for them if you still need a moddeler I would love to help you.

Are you sure we need to get Copyrights permission? For one, LOTR:TW and many other mods have done it without permission. For another, I hate to say it but I doubt Christopher Paolini spends his spare time browsing TWCENTER. :hmmm:

Or is that a bad thing to do?

Also, we are not using units from the movie,(not very much, maybe a tiny amount) but our imaginations, and descriptions in the book.

Hmm...:hmmm:Eragon is a copyrighted idea so I would email him on his official website or something because otherwise you could get in major legal issues and Lotr total war has copyright permission, so you are not buying the idea just asking to implement it. When you ask stress that it is non profit, or you will probably get rejected.
Also his email is private so look here for mailing address
    http://elliottback.com/wp/archives/2...-is-his-email/
It gives you his real life address I would put your email in the letter so you dont have to wait for snail mail to return to you.

Lol... I too am sure he doesnt visit Total War Center

Im almost certain one of the LOTR mods didnt get the rights to do it cause theyve been mentioned hundreds of times. It would seem that Christopher Paolini is going to be a hard man to find.

    What do you think Tyrtaeus?

Right then I'm still awaiting a message from the Fellbeast owner but I'm going to ask someone else in his mod team if they would let us use it.

    This is the Fellbeast;

You do realize that... you can't make units fly... right?

The whole premise of Eragon seems to be dragons, I've never been interested in it myself, but from glancing at movie previews, that seems to be almost the cornerstone of the series.

Not trying to rain on any parades or anything, but I'm sure some of the best modelers and coders out there have postulated about the possibility for flying units, and the fact we've yet to see any in-game further indicates the impossibility of it being made to work. The only even marginally possible option visually, which would entail some sort of ugly connection to the ground that elevated the model, would make gameplay absolutely horrid, if it even worked.

Additionally, working with the greek fire used for flamethrowers will be a shotty representation of a dragon's breath, which I assume is intended, and could not be combined with a rider who has an attack, as in this case it would act as a mount, which can only have a charge attack. Lastly, the animations required for any of these, are mind boggling, and I think the best animators here at the TWC, would have trouble working with the skeletons to make it look at all appealing.

The greatest modeler/skinner in my opinion of any mythology mod to grace the Total War community, Hoggy, author of Blue Lotus, still only took the basic mount method for most of his mounted units and supersized it, and did some work with huge skeletons for ogre-like monstrosities, and it was beautiful, but even that man didn't make a unit fly =/

Again, not trying to rain on any parades, if this is what you want to do, I can't stop you, but I'm only saying this in the hopes maybe it will save you a lot of headache and time spent. I haven't seen any work come out of Mythology: Total War, maybe Tyrtaeus is a prodigy who knows something I don't, can only hope this is the case.

    Good luck with your mod.

    Cheers,
    Augustus

Watch this. You may not be able to have breathing fire but you can still have the dragon itselfs.

That video is quite obviously edited from its original content. Two reasons, the flying units shown in the battle aren't performing any attacks, and they are flying over other units, which is not possible because all of the units need to be connected to the ground in some way, which would mean they'd run into the other units. Secondly, this excerpt from the LOTR:TW ModDB Site:

Another feature that is being implemented for LOTR-TW is the special generals for Mordor, in the form of the Nazgul. Unfortunately, fellbeasts are not feasible with RTW's engine so the Nazgul will lead elite mounted black armored warriors. The uniqueness of this faction and its Ringwraith lords is in the form of their immortality. There will at most be nine Nazgul at one time and if any of them dies, they will respawn again in Barad-dur, if you still hold that fortress, this feature would limit the number of Mordor's generals but they will always be a strong presence.
As well as the fact there isn't some huge hype concerning the matter, because to be quite honest, your mod could be about Dora the Explorer and if it had proper flying units people would download it, so the fact none of their announcements addresses this supports the fact it is a doctored video.

I'm downloading the mod now and will play it, just to further insure this is the case.

Just played the mod, and I stand corrected about the flying units, which is news to me.

That being said, after using the Fellbeasts in battle, they seemed to react strangely :hmmm:. They were able to drop down and attack enemy units, no doubt thanks to intensive animation combined with an area effect attack parameter. They're also interesting to look at, it would seem they're connected to the ground in some way, because the little unit circle is much smaller than their main body, but I don't have 3dsmax to see the .cas file. That being said, I can't conclude they're any more idiotic than your average cavalry based unit when it comes to moving around, they seem to just continue the standard.

For reference sake, the fellbeasts use a mount with the parameter "norider", so the mount is doing the attacking I presume, and the person riding it is just part of the mount model.

Anyways, if you can duplicate this effect 50x over and make it work gameplay-wise, I'll raise my glass to you. Despite the fact it's seemingly been done, it's still overly ambitious to assume air-v-air combat could be respectably achieved. That being said, good luck working it out, and if you manage it, I'll definitely download the mod.

EDIT: And I know A.P. would love skinning a dragon

i remember that the blue lotus mod had some units that basically used flaming torches which could resemble breathing fire.

Air to air combat I have not seen yet. Hmmm dont have a 1.2 folder there all 1.5 thats just great.

Hehe A.P will definately have fun skinning it but first we still need the rights to use their fellbeast model which is taking forever to get.

An update about the fellbeasts in LOTR:TW. After having used them in a siege, it is confirmed that they don't fly, just "fly". The modeler and animation person were just very skilled in covering up how they connect to the ground. One thing they missed is the trail that horses leave in dust, from their hoofprints, fellbeasts still leave this trail.

Additionally, path-finding in cities is absolutely horrid in some respects, they can seemingly get caught in between buildings, even though the little land patch between the buildings is not available to move to . It's a very aesthetically pleasing system, but all of the mechanics for it to work just plain aren't there. The LOTR:TW team did a respectable job of making up for this, but I don't doubt the rigging and animating, and possibly pathfinding, were intensive.

ok well first for dragons the only feasable way I see to get them to actually fly is to get an obnoxiosly good programmer...
