Sometimes the pope with give you missions. Like spread the word of god in foriegn lands. That is what gets your papal faith up. Also, create priest any chance you get and put them in a provence that has low christian beliefs. That will help with your standing.

HolyCrusader. You missed his point. He is playing AS the Papal States (by modding the game files). He IS the Pope.

To answer your question, though.... HolyCrusader is close than you'd think. As the Papal States, you can do nothing to gain favor with the Pope. As such, you can not successfully request a crusade. Ironic, yes, but one was never intended to play as the Papal States, anyway.

You can play the Papal States but you can't control the pope. You can move him around but you can't excommunicate someone or call a crusade. You also can't ask him (or yourself) for a crusade.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

I was able to call a crusade. Also when I declared war on some one they were made enemies of the Faith and were excommunicated.

I encountered the same problem. I played for 100 turns and was able to request a crusade only once. I also was unable to keep adopting generals so eventually it was only the Pope I could use in battle. CA should have made the Papal States a playable faction, how interesting it would be. I bet more people would be willing to play them too.

As the papel states you also have the power over the Priests who can kill anyone with less piety
(forgotten there name) They also disappear when the piety return in a region.
