Default Scotland - What to do?

I'm playing SS4.1 as Scotland. I've conquered the English Island and the castle Caen, but England still has 2 cities in the France area. I allied with Papal States, France, and a few other farther factions, but France betrayed me. So now I'm trying to fight back the French and the British at the same time, and it's getting me nowhere. I tried to make the English my vassal, but they always reject, what do I do?

Sounds like fun. It's always nice if you have an AI that does a good job.
A couple of good wins on the battlefield will solve your problems most of the time. Get the initiative, don't wait for the AI to make a move.

This is where your strategic ability is better than the Ai's. Both France and England get their best troops from castles, so secure Caen and create a second force on the mainland to launch an attack at Angers and Antwerp (?) (been awhile, so whatever the fort is in holland). Try and use a diplomat to get HRE or Denmark to aid you, and don't forget you can raid ie attack, destroy all buildings and retreat.

As a country with pike units, these are great at defence, so have some in Caen to block the gates when you are seiged. Placing them in depth, with guard mode on is a good tactic.

Also remember if they keep attacking you at some point they will get excommuinicated, so at that point a crusade on Toulouse is called for.

To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.

Yeaup that's what I'm doing, here's what it looks like right now...

I conquered Angers (I think via a Crusade) and now I called another one on Rheims (French city)

England has 5 full stacks defending their last town (forgot the name, but it's in mid-Europe a bit above the Spanish peninsula) but I think they are financially in debt, so they can't make more units. Trouble is I can't get them to become my vassal still. Why is that?

HRE is neutral with me and Denmark is allied with me, and I think they're both at war with France, but I can't get either one of them to attack France (to be honest, I've never gotten any faction to attack another faction since I ever started playing this game). And hints?

Just out of curiosity, why are you playing SS 4.1? I've played every version of SS, and the new 6.1 is by far the best game play and most rewarding gaming experience I've had with MTW2.

Do not have the 4.1 Ai files, but becoming a vassal is based on your strength compared to theirs. You proparly need a 4:1 ratio on the border to get them to accept that you more powerful.

I would probarly not take Rheims if there is a better choice available, eg Toulouse, let the French defend that and attack where they are weakest.

Watch out for Spain, they may decide to join in if you get close to them.

If you have Angers, there is little point in Caen being a fort, I would look at converting to a city for better economy. Similarly with England, Nottingham and maybe Inverness is all you need.

To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.

The other factor regarding a vassal is whats your reputation? If you've sacked the British Isles you might be into Dubious / Untrustworthy, which I think makes any diplomatic action harder, including making a faction a vassal.

I gave Reinnes, Angers, and Paris to Papal States because I almost lost all of them because the Spaniards kept on attacking Reinnes, British Angers, and French Paris. At least Papacy can protect me right? I've never seen the pope try to conquer new land.

I plan to wipe out England first (to finish my Campaign mission), and then ransack Toulouse and then pull my army Northeast and defeat the French, and maybe leave a town or two use as my vassal.

Another thing I noticed, my Generals NEVER gain command stars. This has been true since I started this campaign, all my generals have like no stars no matter how many heroic victory I gain with them..

My reputation is mixed I think or something along that line, but it's not a negative rep. And for all the cities/castles on the British Isles I always occupied, because I conquered all of them early on in the game, so there was no population revolting problem.

YOU GAVE ANGERS AWAY . Far better to have given Paris to the Spanish for a peace treaty (maybe even an alliance), that way Spain and France would have started fighting it out. Angers is a very good fort and could have resisted the english forever given that you can support it from Caen.

Now the Pope is just in the way, and believe if he becomes active, which he can, he is a holy terror (no pun intended). Well lets just hope that a new pope is dumb enough to sell it back to you later.
