    Default DX10

Are the graphics of DX10 cards really worth using vista, or would it be better to stick back with XP?

The difference is substantial, If you look for the differences, try Googling DX10/DX9 screenies.

I would say if you have the money, do it.

This will not turn into a Vista/XP arguement so I will keep it short.

Vista is mainly opinionated, IMHO, I love vista, I'm using XP until I get my HD4850, then I'm switching to Vista right away to use the DX10 with Crysis lol.

You can always switch back to XP, and you'll always have vista to go back to if you need it in the future.

EDIT: HERE is a link that compares them, an efficient comparison.

The changes are so minuscule it's not worth it, IMHO.

That page kind of confirms my suspicions about DX10. The differences in even prepared shots always seemed to be remarkably small to me. I assumed that it was because I just don't care too much about graphics (you can tell, I like NetHack!), but I'm not surprised to see evidence it's because DX10 actually isn't doing much.

Yeah I don't see any significant difference either. The Vista High Quality looks more vibrant than the XP, but that's not worth switching for.

It's worth noting that DX11 is on it's way in a few years with the next Windows OS; further complicating users' plans on what to switch to and when.

There is a DX10 "patch" for XP.

I can't tell you for sure but a lot of people who use it report it to work.

Even if it works efficiently (I doubt it) I still expect windows made it illegal to use DX10 on XP.

My impression is that it's complete vaporware and never worked at all. I could be wrong.

DX10 wasn't even released to the public until January 2007 (OEM/Business Nov 06), it's unrealistic to expect developers to be able to take full advantage of DX10 in less then year.

Look at how long DirectX 9c has been around for it's only been until the last couple of years that games have started to come out which show it off to it's fullest. Games like Half Life 2 Ep2 and Crysis looks as great as they do because they have advantage of programmable pixel shaders which have been around since 2002.

It won't be for another 3-4 years until DX10 really starts to shine and sets itself apart from DX9 long shadow. Remember games like the ones I have mentioned are in development for years and years (not applicable to HL2 Ep2, it uses the same engine as previous titles) to develop.

I said it's DX10 for XP that AFAIK is vaporware. DX10 itself is certainly not, although I doubt it's as important as Microsoft's (very successful) marketing campaigns have made it out to be.

It's worth it if your getting a new PC. Other than that XP is fine. Vista is great, but I would only get it with a new system. It would piss me off though if DX11 only worked for Windows 7.

It's supposed to be backwards compatible, last I heard. Some consolation I guess.
