Whats with Milan?

I've been wondering, I've been checking some topics and people are saying that Milan is a bad faction. Whys that?

Some people don't like it because its AI is very aggressive and it always breaks alliances and storms everyone around it, usually either A) gaining a lot of land and becoming a major power, or B) getting crushed by everyone simultaneously. Also, those crossbows are effing annoying

In what context, bad units-wise or bad in that they are aggressive backstabbers? I'm hoping it is the latter because Milan is definitely not weak when it comes to its unit lineup.

Hahaha, these posts are hilarious I've never played as a neighbouring faction to the milanese and somehow they always seem to disappear really quickly in the fog of war down there in northern Italy. I guess this explains why, hehe.

I was playing the HRE once and was allied with Milan against France (backstabbing was planned already ) and those bastards snuck their way in between me and France about half the way to the North Sea.
And then they were of course absolutely unhappy about me moving through their territory to get to France more quickly (while they were moving through mine as if it was theirs). I soon had enough and paused my war against France for a while to wipe out Milan first. They can get very annoying.
Another time, I was playing as Spain and Milan was strongest faction, having conquered what looked like half of France and the HRE.

So, Milan can be a very strong faction, especially early on because of their early superior militia troops. But as said already above, they're hated for their aggressiveness and "backstabby-ness" as well as their unreliable performance when under AI control.

Milan is hell when fighting as france, those italian spearmen are devistating to the french calvary. i barely managed to hold southern france from them only 10 turns into the game. their unit selection is really very good, but their diplomacy is really very bad

LoL I was playing Spain once, and when I typed toggle_fow, it showed Milan conquering all of France! lololol! But you guys are right that Milan are backstabbers, I was France made an alliance and they backstabbed me.

the best way to deal with Milan is to be Portugal and ally with them. Everyone else hates you anyway.

For me personally, the worst factions are Milan and Venice. You just can't trust them. Backstabbers and cheaters, greedy to the fault. How greedy??

im gonna pick up the argument for milan, it relies souly on militias, its cav is far under par once the castles begin to get fuedal and chivalric knights, it has the best crossbows in the game and italian inf, but thats about it, and musketeers, so they are really fun to boss around everyone at first but as the factions develop it gets very hard for them to constantly rely on militias. thats milan in a nutshell when you play it
