    Default The Alan Caganate

Historically, in 387 AD Armenia was divided between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Sassanid Empire. In the very beginning of V AD the Alani tribes returned to the Caucasus from the Western Europe. So at this point the mod is to be changed. Thanks to Ramon there are all necessary files and descriptions so it was possible for me to introduce Alan units. Besides, I've done some corrections, more particularly, I have corrected the Sarmatian Armoured Archers - now they use swords for melee as it is depicted on their unit cards. I had to redo their texture and also the Sarmatian Argaragantes texture in order to give these units proper weapons. I have also refined the Sassanian recruitment tree prolonging the recruitment terms of their heavy cavalry (which was given also higher cost and upkeep) and the Alani building tree to offer them a choice between paganism and christianity. The other changes involve diplomacy: the Alani are initially at war with the Sassanids and have an alliance with the Slavs, - and cultural corrections (the Hephtalites and the Huns now are of the same culture - both were Turks - while the Alani use the nomad culture; buildings icons are still to be changed).

The campaign description for the Alani:
    The Alan Caganate

    Difficulty Factor: ESTIMATED HARD
The Alani are an Iranian-speaking people who have dominated the southern steppes for centuries, a loose coalition of smaller tribes including the Scythians and Roxolani. Roman sources also call them "the Sarmatians" and even "the Scythians", yet these tribes were just part of the tribal alliance as well as the Alani themselves. Originally they held a region from Danube river to Ural mountains and from the Caucasus to the northern forests. The invasion of the Goths in III AD divided them in two separate confederations: the Caucasian Alans and the Danube Alans. In IV AD the Huns made the Caucasian Alans a part of their alliance and set them to move westwards but being reinforced by the Danube branch the Alani broke the alliance and went through the Western Europe to Africa and then back to the Caucasus. Historically, they were crushed only by the Mongols in XIII AD.

The Alani are superb horsemen. Unlike most of their neighbours, their army consists mostly of heavy cavalry, not so heavily armored as Sassanid ones but far more numerous. They value bravery and fighting skills above all, and are not to be easily ovecome. The Alani are in a way similar to the Huns in terms of warfare - their heavy cavalry is at least as powerful as the hunnic one - but more civilized. They have a long history and are not just excellent warriors - even the Romans often employed them as mercenaries - but also good traders. They guarded trade caravans following from the Far East to Europe and back, and so they had enough money to arm more heavy cavalrymen then any other nation. Utilize their warriors correctly and they will be the key to victory.
Native unit roster does not include infantry units - only AOR troops are available. The only exclusion was made for Horde Bosphoran Infantry (corrected as the mod original used bosphoran_warrior model but bosphoran_infantry unit cards and description - now spearmen). It also does not include ultra-light cavalry/HA with 0-turn recruitment term, starting with medium-heavy lancers. This is done to prevent the Alani from becoming stack-producing machine as their native cavalry troops aren't much weaker than the Sassanian ones. The units size of the Alan Horse Archers for the Alani was increased from 25 to 45 leaving for other factions as it was (+1 unit slot).
    The Sarmatian Lancers

Horde Alan Cavalry (almost similar to the Alan Horse Archers)

    The Sarmatian Argaragantes

    The Alan Lancers

    The Royal Argaragantes

As you can see on this screenshot, the horde sarmatian lancers are more numerous than the "regular" ones. This is balanced by slightly lower stats of all the horde cavalry units and almost non-existent horde infantry.

Also I must mention that steppe/Iranian/Roman heavy cav units were given extra charge and also area attribute for spears. Super-heavy cavalry was also given combat penalty in snow.

And to prove the statement in the campaign desc that "unlike most of their neighbours, their army consists mostly of heavy cavalry, not so heavily armored as Sassanid ones but far more numerous". According to the historical and archaeological researchers the total part of heavy cavalry was 7% in the Roman armies, 15-16% in the Iranian armies and about 50% in the Alan and Hunnic armies.

I am currently rethinking unit roster and DMB database: some model slots seem to be unused at all and some Armenian units are probably to be removed: it isn't worth DMB and EDU slots to include units unique to the removed faction such as Nakharar Gund and Aspet Cavalry. They might be omitted even as mercs IMHO.
The other corrections will include missile stats changes for some archers/HA units such as hunnic foederaty to represent the fact that eastern/nomadic peoples used composite bows instead of European-style short bows.

    Hi,

Great addition to this mod! Thou shalt be rep-ped!

    One problem though:
Where is the IBFD 7.04 download link?

The one on the Main page (on Filefront) doesn't work!

Ramon, thanks a lot. I am pleased and will do my best to improve.
Falcon, thank you too. Although I have rather good source considering the Alan names and culture, it is in Russian. It is not a problem as Russian is my native language but it contains only transliterated names, with no transcriptions, and then your help is significant.

hellas1, I have uploaded this patch to my site - check the first post in the thread for the download link.

    Ooph...
I have slightly refined the add-on - it wasn't an easy thing to catch what was bad with character names and why victory conditions did not change.

    Changes:
    - Victory conditions for the Alani are now correct: they have to conquer the Caucasus, Crimea and the East-European plato.
    - Corrected models: Argaragantes and Roayl Argaragantes now use spears.
    - Slaves cannot now access Peroozetae.
    - Removed Nakharar Gund.
    - Fixed bug that allowed the Alani to train Armenian Legionaries (as well as other Armenian troops) everywhere. Now the Armenian units are AoR-available.
    - Added native Alan names (also changed descr_strat.txt).
    - Changed original cultures of some settlements to reflect faction roster changes.

    Known bugs:
    - Alan female names unchanged.
    - Vanilla male Alan names are still present.

    Download.

    Installation instructions:
Follow steps described in the first post in the thread, but just use the download link given in this post insted of that was given in step 5.

    Hi Orthanner,

Excellent Work sir! Plus Rep for you!

    One thing though:

Where the Alans Christians? I ask this because the Perso-armenian faction banner is still around! I thought they were pagans, weren't they? Also, were the Persarmenians around first historically or the Alans in that area?

Also, one request besides getting this mod perfect, as you yourself have stated sir: Can you change the flag please? Sorry, but I like historical accuracy.

    Excellent work!
hellas1 P.S. I sense rep coming YOUR way!

I like the historical accuracy too and I should mention that the Ossetians (the direct descendants of the Alani) are definitely Orthodoxal Christians. The Alani at the time were to choose between paganism and christianity (and this situation is reconstructed in game). Besides, I am pretty awful artist so I cannot create a new banners for them; I think that the dragon sign would be perfect for them, but then - what to do with the Hephtalites?.. Their banner needs to be changed in this case, otherwise a player can be confused.

Idea: not an ideal variant but better then nothing - to give the dragon banner to the Alani and the inverted Hunnic banner to the Hephtalites. Will do this evening - if I don't fall ill.

UPD: I've left the Hephtalites as they were but changed the Alani symbols to the vanilla Sarmatian ones. Could not change *.dds and *.rsd files. File is re-uploaded under the same name so one can use the download link in my previous post.

I just downloaded the new download and good job with changing the Alan symbol!

Why can't you change the .dds and .rsd files?

    Maybe Senor Ramon can help?

Because of specific features of DDS format it is not an easy thing to change a primitive image. I can (and I did) change unit DDS textures but faction symbols are much simpler and I just cannot see them when I open DDS file in graphics editor. Apropos *.rsd files, I cannot work with them at all.

So if senor Ramon helped, it would be great.

the 'alpha channel' in faction symbols files are what really makes a faction symbol. Open up the .dds file and enable the alpha to show up. u actually edit the alpha channel, and just add a solid color in the RGB channel.

as for .rsd files, I have no idea how to edit them.

    Updated the mod.

    Changes:
Corrected Alanian and Hephtalite traits and triggers.
Fixed a bug that caused CTDs when low-level settlements revolted to the Sassanids or to the Alani.
Splitted the sassanid levy spearmen AoR: the Sassanids can now recruit them everywhere.
Allowed the Alani to recruit herdsmen.

Can you advise me the corrections you made to the low-level settlements so that I can check in IJ.

    @ Orthanner:
What you have done is very good.

However, that let me have to ask a general question:

Shall we change the Persarmenians for the Alans for IBFD V8?

2 julianus heraclius: the problem was mostly with the Alani 'cause they just haven't had any recruitment entry for the basic settlement level. So I have done two things:
Splitted the sassanid levy spearmen AoR: the Sassanids can now recruit them everywhere.
Allowed the Alani to recruit herdsmen.
2 Gäiten: if the timeframe starts in early V AD then definitely yes. At this time the Alanian hordes returned from the Western Europe and Africa became the dominating power on the Caucasus.

Thanks for that. What you are saying is that really, every faction needs to be able to recruit some unit at the basic settlement level otherwise a CTD may happen when these settlements revolt.

    Cheers again.

Ah, the burden of selecting factions...

I personally would be rather sad to see the Armenians go, especially since their units are very nice. And when it comes to the aspect of just having historically 100% correct factions, we have to make compromises. The Romano-Brits and the Picts/Gaels shold be the first to go if we only applied that way of thinking. The Mauri can also be debated, of course. But then there's balancing and game play. I personally believe that offering the player a good and interesting variation of factions to chose from is just as important as sticking to the ambition of historical accuracy.

    How about this:

    1. Keep the Armenians as a faction and

    2. Make Orthanner's "Alan Caganate" ( great job, by the way! ) an optional install.

    Or

    1. Replace the Armenians with the Alans but keep the Armenian units we have as AOR and mercenaries. That way we can offer the player a "RPG experience", for example: when playing as the Romans or the Sassanids, you can send a general to conquer the Armenian lands. When completed, the general will get a "King of Armenia" title ( ancillary ) and will rule Armenia as a subject with the backings of Rome or Persia.
