Default lack of amphibious assault from AI

ok, i have yet to see an amphibious assault against anyone from the AI. Do they actually do it? I always tend to take rhodes because of the wonder whenever I'm playing a faction remotely near asia minor. Then I always try to tackle the mainland and gets owned, so I just leave asia minor alone and finish what I'm doing first. Heck, the macedonian black plague spread all over asia minor once and was threatening cyprus (there is a land bridge to get there), but they still didn't touch the island.

Are the AI programmed to use their ships as a form of transport?

In the file descr_sm_factions.txt you will find that there is an entry for 'prefers_naval_invasions'. Only Carthage and Britons have this set to YES (at least in the version I have installed).

Unfortunately, that flag isn't as useful as you'd like. The AI, especially when it starts getting short on troops, will send 3-5 unit 'attack forces' overseas and won't recall them if it needs troops at home. I once saw Carthage send two attack forces totaling 8 units to try to retake Melite while Hadrumentum and Thapsus were besieged by less than half a stack each.

With Rome-ALX they send stacks after stacks. In current my campaign Ptolemaic transfered all but 2 stacks of armies by sea into greece and pwned greek cities and macedon.

20 units on fleet is "normal", while 8 or 3-5 like in BI happens very rarely. But generally the naval invasion is only for rich and big factions. Carthage could field only a few fleets and they did send 2-3 stacks in previous campaigns, but they're not rich enough even with all the numidian regions to launch a full-scale invasion.

I see the Illyrians often lands stacks in Italy.
