Default CTD in DLV and possible solutions.

I have been playing DLV since 5.1. I’m an avid fan of the mod and I’m always reading the forums but do not post often. I’m not placing this information in any of the DLV version bug threads as I believe these issues cross multiple versions and some are related to the mods interweaved with DLV.

After playing DLV for such a long time I frequently started to get more CTD the closer I got to the year 1250. I believe I have found some basic reasons for some CTDs, usually occurring when progressing to the next turn.

The first problem is if a CTD happens almost immediately after pressing the end turn button. This occurs if you have a family member or general in a settlement with no name present on his traits card. This combined with a building that has one turn remaining to completion. This seems to be the situation that causes the crash here and I assume that a trait is trying to be given to the no name character for completing that building.

Solution: simply after the crash start up your autosaved game and look through your settlements and take that character out of the settlement. Don’t put the character in any other settlement, a fort is ok. I’m unsure if you use this character to fight battles that if it gains traits if that will cause a CTD.

Second problem, is rebel or slaves end of turn CTD. Now this issue has been around awhile and I get most of my CTDs at this point. Once you have pressed end turn and all the other factions have had their turn it finishes with the rebels. When it gets to the rebel or slave turn it CTDs. Now I have been working on this for awhile. Sometimes if you can move, bribe or destroy rebel or slave armies and or kill heretics or witches the turn will progress. It does seem these things help or prevent the CTD. Sometimes you can get to the next turn and sometimes it is impossible to continue. I have had several games where it crashed every time and it was impossible to continue and that really annoyed me(can’t say here how it made me really feel). Just when the game was getting good too!

The problem I have found seems to be characters with no name or only one name. If you notice all characters in DLV have 2 or more names or a title with their name. Usually this is a heretic or a witch with a single name that has caused the CTD. Again this CTD could be that these characters are gaining traits or being killed by the AI factions, result=crash.

Solution: I don’t like to use the medievalshell much but to fix this problem with the heretics and witch’s with one name you need to bring them to a place where you can kill or isolate them.

So using medievalshell or the ~ key to start medievalshell (sorry I know most people know how to work this but some don’t)

First use: toggle_fow to open up the map and then start scanning the map for heretics and witches with one name only(sometimes this can cause a CTD when you click on a unit). More often than not I have found them in the north east quarter of the map, Poland, Lithuania, Novgorod, Kiev, Mongol area etc. Im not sure if this has something to do with the Name mod used in DLV but possibly. I did use the name verifier to check for errors but nothing.
Second: Once found, find a place near your settlements that have a lot of assassins or priests. Find a nice open area and place the cursor over the area and using medievalshell type: show_cursorstat to get the X, Y coordinates of the cursor.

Then type move_character name X, Y (using the cursor coordinates).
    example: move_character Hilda 235 181.

Once the Heretic or witch is there kill them with a priest or assassin. I have found most single name heretics and witch’s have low skills and are easy to kill. If you can’t kill them move them again to another priest or assassin for another go. If all fails move them to the Caribbean region or the Islands east or Arhus and isolate them there (sometimes works).

This did work for me several times. I had three saved games that I was unable to continue on. These three were games played with DLV 5.6. One game is a recent game that I had problems with 2 days ago and the others 2 saves are from the past 2 months. All saves would not continue. I tried the solution above and now all 3 saves are now working again.

The third problem is battles freezing and this has been dealt with by Furin and works very well but I just wanted to add an update. Furin’s alternative.zip.

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...=freeze&page=2

I used to get the freezes and this file helped perfectly, not one freeze since using it.

Recently I tried DLV 5.7 and I started getting in battle freezing again, so I used the alternative.zip and all is fine again.

These issues above are not related to my pc
    Im running: AMD64x2 4400+, 4Gig of ram, 500gig HD, GF8800gtx and vista 64 ultimate.

Although even with this system sometimes in battles(especially big battles with multiple armies) I still get a message saying I need to upgrade my PC. Anyone get this message in the dropdown box of the battle screen? Same type of box or tab that tells you about reinforcements. I don’t even have the unit size set to huge, usually large. Just curious.
If these solutions do not work let me know or add what solutions you use to this thread.

Sorry for the long read but I have noticed from occasions people having these issues mentioned above. I just wanted to help.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
    - DLV uses the character names mod and i remember someone (Lusted ?) mentioned along time ago that this submod could maybe create namerelated certain ctd's ......

I should have added these names to the first post. Here is the list of heretics and witchs I removed to get my saved games working again.

Heretics: Sextus, Nautics and Jubal. Nautics is not in any of the name text files
Witchs: Birkita, Eptarys, Bendis and Dana.

In one of my saved games there were 2 witchs at the same time named Dana. I m not sure but this maybe a cause of a conflict.

Since removing these single named heretics or witchs I have not had my game crash once when on the slaves end turn move.

I don't understand this problem. These are vanilla women names, not changed in DLV. Where does Nautics come from ?

The problem that I have experienced is repeatable and unpreventable ctd during the end turn process. This was happening 100% with 3 saved games making them completely unplayable due to being unable to continue to the next turn The CTD always happened on the rebel turn. By removing the characters in the previous post all 3 saved games work with no problem. I have played all 3 games for at least 5 more turns each with no problem.

One thing I did notice is that when the end turn got to the rebels the time to process their faction was considerably faster. Prior to removing the heretics and witches and the unpreventable CTDs, the rebel turn would take about 30 seconds to 1 minute and a half to process and sometimes it would crash. After removing these characters the time has been reduced considerably to about 15 to 20 seconds.

The witches or female characters are from Vanilla as you said repman, unchanged in DLV. Im not sure which names or characters are causing issues but I will state the three main characters that I suspect maybe causing my issues.

    First
Witch named "Bendis", she was the only witch on the map and there were no heretics on the map at all in the first saved game that CTD. I killed her off by moving her to a place I could kill her. Killed her and the saved game ran fine.

    Second
2 Witches with the same name in the same saved game. "Dana" one in "Ostandet" the other in "Turkis Cumans" regions. Unsure if this is an issue or not but 2 characters with the same name at the same time could cause a conflict especially when traits might be assign during the end of turn process. Killed them both game ran fine.

    Third
[COLOR=#000000] My Mistake BIG, the character named "Nautics" is actually"Nautius" and it does exist in the files, sorry for the headache. Sorry my Bad This still doesn't change the fact that the heretics seem to have something to do with my CTDs on the rebel turn.

[COLOR=black]Nautius showed up in 2 of the saved games with the other two heretics I mentions Juba and Sextus. Killed them and and saved games ran fine. One of the saved games was the saved game with the 2 "Dana" characters.[COLOR]

This might not answer your questions clearly repman, but this is what happened and how I fixed the problem. I have read previous posts with similar issues before in the DLV forum and other Twcentre forum threads so its not just DLV. I just hope this may give some idea where to look to solve this issue.

Im going to get known for my notoriously for long winded posts hahaha.

I was having the Rebel turn CTD on every Campaign at around turn 20 - 30, deleted all mention of those character names from all the files and now on my new Campaign I'm past turn 60 + with no problems.

    So thanks alot!
