If your a catholic faction and fellow catholics are on crusade, all you have to do is get a general with I believe at least eight units in his stack, then right click the general and on the bottom left of the mini-window it will say join the crusade. Click it and begin to hire all the free upkeep mercs you can hold.

What really sucks is when you assemble two or three full stacks, and by the time you get to the destination the crusade ends. Now your stuck with literally thousands of upkeep cost per stack unless of coarse you disband them. Still annoying though.

That's right, if the crusade comes early and you hire a lot of crusader units, they can easily eat up all your income. But you can still send them on a bloody rampage in enemy territory.

Yeah but you then also have two or three stacks of hardened veterans deep in enemy territory. You have 2 options:

    1. Disband the bulk of the units, get your general to the coast and hire some mercenary ships to get him back home.

    2. Pillage, plunder and general rampage Conquer a few regions and the income you'll get will usually counter the costs of the troops.

Yes, but with my luck it usually happens when I'm in catholic territory and don't feel like putting up with the popes B.S. at the moment.
