    Default Blasphemy.

    Hi,

Just a little question: How would you define blasphemy or could you give any example of what you would consider blasphemy?

This question come to me because it seems like for some people there are diferent actions they would consider blasphemy, and some others dont consider to be it. Things like cursing God or a deity in general is considered blasphemy for some, but for some others just saying something like "Oh my God!" clasifies as blasphemy. Furthermore, I've heard some people say that for example, blaspheming the Holy Spirit, cosidered an unforgivable sin, requires of a more, I'd say "sinful" action than cursing or saying "Dear Lord!"

Also, does blasphemy include blasphemous thoughts or is it something you need to actively say or physically do?

    So... that's all.

To put it into my (form of, at least) Christian perspective, blasphemy is ultimately denying the Holy Spirit, and you mentioned that yourself, actually. Cursing God could also be considered blasphemy, though the one I mentioned first is unforgivable, I'm not sure about cursing God.

I think you should be careful how you define the Unforgivable Sin. Many respected theologians disagree on what it actually is--and I've even heard the possibility that the Unpardonable Sin was refusing to acknowledge Christ's Deity while seeing Him incarnated, and so it's now a sin that's impossible to commit. We don't really know for sure what it is. We should just use that doctrine as a reminder that God is not to be trifled with.

Blasphemy (Greek blaptein, "to injure", and pheme, "reputation") signifies etymologically gross irreverence towards any person or thing worthy of exalted esteem. Blasphemy is a sin against the virtue of religion by which we render to God the honour due to Him as our first beginning and last end. St. Thomas says that it is to be regarded as a sin against faith inasmuch as by it we attribute to God that which does not belong to Him, or deny Him that which is His

Ok. Which would you consider are the "limits of Blasphemy" (what would you consider ok and not ok?)? i.e. Is it blasphemy to say "Oh my God!" as an expression?

I don't believe that any one religion is the "true" right one for all; they're man-made institutions. So, I don't believe in blasphemy per se, as that'd require an objective "one, true" religion and object of worship to be blasphemed against.

I think that if anything could be considered "blasphemy" it'd be: being the follower of a particular deity and insulting them directly while still claiming to be a follower of them. That's more of being very rude to the wrong entity, than the traditional, Christianized concept of "blasphemy".

I don't think there is such a thing as blasphemy, that comes with not having a religion.

blasphemy-- The Cake is A Lie! Reality--- The Cake is Good!

Actually though.. blasphemy differs from each person's viewpoint.. in a religious person's mind, Charles Darwin was a blasphemous liar.. his theory of evolution was perceived a lie by theologians, whereas to the atheist, it is seen as a clarification that many should listen to..for the agnostic.. I suppose it is just balancing out their position on not knowing..

Same here. I just wanted to know what people thought about it.
