CALL FOR IDEAS! Post your ideas in this thread for the first Themed AAR Competition no later than August 1!
How about commisioning a themed AAR competition? This might be launched every 2 months and could be used to suggest a particular topic, theme, narrative or even something irreverent like a joke. The AARs submitted must publish at least x-amount of updates and be specifically created to enter that particular AAR comp. This would get around the category issue and also might inspire AAR writers to try their hands at new material or narratives.

--------
Well, one might launch an AAR Competition with a theme of 'Sacrifice' -
"The AAR Competition Organizers invite members to submit AARs for the next Competition. This will be a themed Competition based around the notion of 'Sacrifice'. All AARs submitted must be written specifically for this competition and require a minimum of 5 updates within the competition period which will run for 2 months, finishing on the cut-off date of (. . .). There is no restriction on the type of AAR submitted - it can be humorous, tragic, irreverent or cryptic - as long as the theme is explored or commented upon in some fashion! There will be a one week voting schedule in which all RTW members will be allowed to vote for their favourite AAR." Or something similar . . .
Other themes might be the end of youth, revenge, casualties of war, I went to the market to sell my cow and came back with these magic beans . . . actually the last one is irreverent
The themes can be anything - even abstract like 'blue' - as long as they are open enough to allow broad raft of responses. You could initiate a special prize of the most inventive AAR outwith the nominated top 3 which allows writers to be really off the wall . . . Anyway, just some ideas, throw them away if you don't like them!

Perhaps a 3rd person report on one person's exploits?
Theme it on a particular civilisation or something? i.e. barbarian, roman, hellenic, eastern

I like all the themes mentioned. At the same time, I would start with something more general, so more AARs could fit and more people got involved.
- single-battle ARR (good to start with)
- compaign AAR (I mean conquest of a city/region/nation in a number of battles/turns) Authors of long-going ARRs could nominate a part of their AARs.
- best start of an AAR competition; start+1 update (long-going AARs can also participate, of course). Btw, I think this theme could boost the number of AARs started, right?
Repeated nomitation should be encouraged. After all, there are not that many AARs, if even you count all the forums.

Re: Themed AAR Competition - ideas and discussion
Magister Equitum I have thought just the same!
- battle report - you report the runoff and the outcame of a single battle, be it a field battle or a siege
- campaign AAR - report the progress of a specific campaign, with emphasis on the faction as a whole
- character report - you follow a single (or more character), emphasis on the personality traits, life events, etc.
But we could also mix this idea with the themed competition, so we simply give a theme to a battle report competition, like "The Sacrifice" - where you sacrifice one of your generals to save the arses of the whole army... or "Endgame", where you start your report after the 50th turn.
Would any of you support this?
And finally more ideas for themes
:
- "Soldier of Fortune"
- "Defying Doom"
- "Divine Intervention"

On the original idea, what about,
Guerilla Type
(i.e a small force trying to destroy a much larger force, perhaps with hit and run / ambush / horse archer tactics)
