The Kara-Khitan never got into any armed conflict with the Chinese, i.e. the Song (who were geographically out of there sphere of influence) so I suspect they could be skirmishing or mercs for the Uighurs, but I'm not sure.

Well, its true that Chinese emperors were in the conflict with the Uighurs, or the Turks.
I wonder from what period this painting could be??

The Kara-Khitan never got into any armed conflict with the Chinese , but
they have conflict with Tibet(吐蕃).
