Default Did gamespy kill MTW2 online....

When I first joined the on-line community back over a year and a half ago, the gamespy lobby was packed. Now after several months of login issues with gamespy, the lobby is a shadow of it's former self.

    My question is this.

Did gamespy kill this glorious online game?

Have all the online MTW2 players gone to the hamachi servers?

Have people just found new games to play?

Really is a damn shame, it's such a badass game.

Honestly, connecting to Gamespy hasn't been -too- bad last week. I just have a TV or music on and click connect... it'll fail 2-3 times but then I get in.
If it's much worse for other people, then it makes things like tournaments hard to organize, so absolutely it's killing M2 multiplayer- which is genuinely fun when you get in.

Yes, GameSpy killed it. My CD key doesn't even work. I've tried all of the suggestions online, but it still doesn't work. It must be a bad CD key. Anyway, I can still play Rome...

Strange what sugguestions did you try? I have found getting in to gamespy seems to be hit or miss lately, sometimes I get on others it takes 20 tries.

I tried every combination of adding the dashes, not adding the dashes, using 'O's instead of '0's, using '0's instead of 'O's, using capital letters, using lowercase. It always said invalid CD key when I tried to connect.

That's because MTW-VI's network interface module was debugged and is stable, while M2TW's network interface module was buggy. It is a known fact.

Now there's a name I haven't seen in years, welcome to TWC Lady An

nice to think people are still enjoying VI and as good as the network code may on MTW don't think I could return to especially not with ETW around the corner. In fact if I was going to back to anything it would be RTW as I hear that community has no problems either.

It's really a shame though and I'm not totally convinced it's M2 code because there was no where near the problem we are having now when M2 came out. I think it's more or less gamespy's servers possibly coupled with M2's less than robust network interface as you say.

So for now I guess I'll continue log my 30 or so attempts it takes to get logged in...

Gamespy is absolute bollocks, if it wasn't for that piece of crap (CA WHY DO YOU SUPPORT IT???) I would have spent at least 10 times as many hours on M2 Multiplayer.

Instead of just logging in to a busy lobby and quickly finding a game whenever you want there's usually some problem with everyone connecting to a game which kills it, and that's just if you get online in the first place.

well I don't think "support" is actually the right word to describe the relationship. I wish there was some....

They didn't find a new game to play but many of them went back to RTW. Afaik the RTW lobby is much more populated than the M2TW lobby.
Aditionally, many clans don't play vanilla M2TW no more but Retrofit Multiplayer, which is a lot more fun and balance. On Retrofit you can be quite sure that you'll find an opponent if you log-on in the evening.

I disagree, unless they are playing retrofit during peak hours which is basically the time I can't seem to ever get logged in when I try. However regarding retrofit it self, I don't like it as it was never made for realism so I won't play it. When I am able to get logged in more people are playing M2, but the lobby is pathetically low in numbers. It's just hard to believe that this cannot be addressed especially for the latest title of the series it makes no sense.

Well, Retrofit mainly brings the Kingdoms changes into the original game and into the grand campaign. Retrofit Multiplayer additionally has some changings that makes each faction more balanced for an enhanced gameplay. I agree with you that's not completely for realism, but at least it's a lot more like Barbarian Invasion now... Which was the best TW experience for me so far Obviously, all this is subjective and it's fair enough that you think differently about it
