Default An army marches on its stomach...and its flasks of water

am I right in thinking that there is a feature written into the game to reduce the number of men when marching through a desert?

can you tell me whihc factions this involves, how it works, where it works etc....i love it!!!

by the way, you have made answered many a gaming related prayer with this mod, the attention to detail is brilliant! Its that good I'm wiritng an AAR on it...check it out at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=180338

Don't think there is such a feature in BC.

Uncrossable deserts are just....not accessible in BC.
An army loses its men through a miriad of causes, and deserts not the only one. Think Hannibal also lost a good number of men cross the Alps.

If such feature is to be implemented then all field army would dwindle in number every turn, and the AI would be severely hurt by this. Human player would just make town-to-town trips for his armies.

well I'll tell you what I did then...
Had a stack of some light spears and two units of templar knights exploring the desert for a rebel settlement (arabian desert region to be precise) I sent one unit of knights north, the other south and the rest of the stack down the middle
next turn all units had lost two men...kinda in the same way you lose men from a garrison during a siege

something must have happened while they were in the desert
maybe its only for KoJ as they always ended up losing men marching through the desert under all that armour

Nah, I think most likely a little earthquake or flashflood struck, and you did not notice.

BC most certainly does not have script reducing the size of marching armies.

Although the idea of losing men due to lack of water or other necessities would indeed be realistic, it would be bad in the currant MTW game.

As it has been stated before, the AI would have to be exempt from this rule and those of you who have played SS know how annoying this is. (IE Jihad declared against Constantinople and Moors show up 50 turns later)

The second problem is that every one would disagree as to the rate at which men are lost, for an example the Crusaders did lose a lot of their men before the battle of Hattin due to lack of water but this was more to the fact that their commanders were idiots than to the heat as by this time many of the crusaders had lived in the middle east for a good while or their armor as Saladin's armies wore armor as well.

Third, the game would mess it up somehow and suddenly half of your army would die in a single turn, sucks for gameplay.

Mabey in Empire total war they could make the game from scratch with this type of game play in mind and it would work but as is I would vote No.

I think there is something that contributes to the loss of men when crossing a desert, as well as the complete restriction of crossing an expanse of desert that is too far from a settlement. I have lost a few men trying to do this (maybe 10-15 in a full stack). Perhaps it is a feature of the vanilla game, just more prominent in BC because a large portion of the campaign map contains deserts.
