The Future of Mankind theory of evolution

as you can see thousands of years from now when the sun will go cold and when darkness fills the earth what do you think might happen to the living species here on the planet? others are dependent on light to live like plants and some animals but when the light goes out surely they will die...

so here's my theory during the age when the sun dies humans will evolve to a different specie... one that can see in the dark eyes become bigger and skin grayish or pale because there is no light from the sun that makes the color or pigmentation of our skin.. and the world will be very cold.

but we need not to worry when that time comes we will all be dead and when that time comes maybe just maybe people will be living in a distant universe with their new sun and new world.
    well what say you?

Not likely. The sun is what allows life. If it permanently goes out, all life dies. It takes energy to move, to digest things, to think, to do anything at all. Guess what happens when we can't get any more energy? We die. Unless we can get some kind of elaborate system of extracting energy from the core of the Earth... But that doesn't matter. Because the sun won't 'go cold' in a few thousand years. In a few billion, it'll explode in a supernova that will wholly destroy the Earth. Before that, it'll likely incinerate us as it grows in size.

You mean billions, not thousands, right?

Anything without some other energy source will die. This would include all unintelligent life, sooner or later, unless preserved by intelligent life.

You're talking about billions of years in the future. In fact, you're probably talking about a period longer than life has existed to date. If any products of the human species still exist, it's unlikely that they'll have anything resembling flesh or genes at all.

If it were left up to evolution without serious technological intervention, we'd all die, period. All plant life grows based on sunlight, and animals eat plants. We wouldn't have time to get pale skin, because we'd be dead within a couple of years.

It's getting better, before the sun dies. It'll do like any other dieing star and pump itself up to a red giant, thus vapourising earth and any intelligent and unintelligent life

Do we really know what the sun is going to do?

Does that mean we are psychic?

Or are we just speculating like our beloved OPEC minister did about the price of oil a few months ago.

    @Dark89

I think some of us may well evolve into something like this...

The reason we think we know what is going to happen to the Sun is because we have a lot of other stars in all stages of their lives to look at (millions!) and because we have developed a theory of Stellar Nucleosynthesis that explains how stars develop.

When stars are plotted on a graph of colour against luminosity (the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram), the majority of stars form a thick band on the diagram that we call the Main Sequence, the Sun is one of these.

According to the theory, all stars on the main sequence are still fusing hydrogen at their core. The difference in their mass determining where on the main sequence they appear (i.e. how bright and what colour).

When the Sun runs out of hydrogen at the core 5.5 Billion years from now, the core will collapse due to gravity, but a shell around the core will become dense enough to start fusing hydrogen itself, causing the outer layers to be pushed out increasing the visible diameter of the Sun to around 2AU, which is ironically exactly the size of the Earth's orbit.

So in conclusion it will get very hot before it gets cold!

Theres no need to worry about a sun dying cold. Us Humans haven't lived on the earth for a Million years and seeing as how we got billions of years till the sun goes red giant we will probably be a super advanced race if nothing else kills us.

Humans will evolve long before that happens (maybe in a hundred years) and the way we will evolve is being conducted right now. Yes man made evolution, we just take DNA codes from different animals such as: animal night vision, heightened sense, etc and combine it with ours.

it's not that easy... in the most cases there's no single gene for let's say: Nightvision.

You have to understand not only witch genes are involved, but also in wich ontogenetic stadium they are expressed at what rate and in witch tissue...

Horizontal gene transfer is known in Bacteria, but flip flopping genes from higher organisms (and we're talking about gene networks here) is complicated as soon as they are not tightly related species!

You don't have to worry about our Sun from another 5 billion years. However in 2 billion years time the Andromeda galaxy will pass close by our galaxy with unpredictable effects on our solar systems galactic orbit. Our planet could end up in regions far more violent than our quiet little back water out here in the spiral arms.

seems to me that the next "evolution" (iteration would be more apt) of humanity will involve machines. Scientists are making breakthroughs in adapting computers to the human brain. This could allow each person with all the knowledge on the Internet. The next step in evolution will be much smarter humans.

Have looked at the internet recently? This development could lead to people who can believe six different contradictory things before breakfast. People who value fluff and fashion above reality. People obsessed with their on-line image, their virtual friendships and the world-shaking intellectual power of the pathetic ramblings on their blogs. In short, people like me.

haha well maybe ALL the info on the web is a bad thing but the capability to have all the info from an online library is pretty cool.

I had an interesting thought. Most organisms evolve in order to adapt to a new environment. But it seems that humans are able to adapt to almost any environment without the need to evolve. So it is really hard to say under what conditions humans will move on to the next step of evolution. Maybe we will be a race of Einsteins? Maybe it will have something to do with computers like bocheetus said? I just don't know.

I am really more curious how the creationist community will react after a baby is born that is proof of evolution (assuming creationists are still around when/if that happens). But this is a topic for another thread...

Macro evolution is to gradual to be directly observed, although I'm not sure about micro evolution occurring in humans.
