    Default Provence names arnt changing.

    Hi
I am currently trying to edit the names of provinces in my vannilla games, I have currenly changed the province names in the maps base file and the imperial_campaign. Well my attempt to change the names didnt work and I have obviously left somthing out...also since the files originally have read only attributes I copy then deleted the file then paste, probly one of the reasons there. So if you can correct me from what I've done wrong here it would be much appreciated, thanx.

If you want to change only the display of names in the campaign map, then all you need to do is an alteration of data\text\imperial_settlement.... (Not sure about the exact name, but it is the text file with the longest name.
You might have to get alpaca's bin to txt tool to convert the txt.string.bin file to simply txt.
The entries in this file look something like that:

    {London}London
    {Wessex}Wessex

The part in parentheses refers to entries in map\descr_regions.txt and should not be touched. The entry on the right is what gets displayed on the campaign map. After you save the game will create a new txt.string.bin file, so do not be concerned about that. Simply back up the file you are want to work on BEFORE you start modding. (But then this is modding rule number one and you surely know that).

    Invisible? Are you running vista?
File first switch = the following entry is added to your desktop shortcut: --io.file_first
The switch tells the game to read files in the direcories first before looking in the packs for them.

It would help if you answered questions fully, really.
First the files are invisible, then you can't read them. Which one is it?
Meshes are files created by a 3D graphics program, no wonder you can't read them.
I guess from your response that you are running XP.

Always ready to post something, only to later realise that I sounded like a badly educated child.
Try not to live up to your sig.

I think I would be better off If I just left all this as I only feel like Im humiliating myself again.
ok but I will say what I can.

I Have a windows XP computer
The Files that are invisible include most of the vannila textures for units only the english show up(yes I see the diference between a mesh and textures now)
The text C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data The text file that is suppose to be inside the data file that has the imperial_settlements does not show. Thats as clear as I can percieve it at the current, I am beggining to think I need to download somthing else for it now.
I am sorry if I have been wasting anyones time.

We all have started not knowing. Knowing that we have asked. And have been answered:
The files that you can see are 'unpacked' from the very beginning when your game was installed.
The files you cannot see are 'packed' into the data files in the pack folder.
To 'see' them you will have to 'unpack' them. If you have version 1.2 then you will have a folder named 'tools'. It has a sub folder named 'unpacker'. Here you will a file called 'unpack all'. Double click this file to unpack all 'invisible' files.
Once you have done this we can continue.
Please note that it will take several minutes for all the files to unpack.
The program will also ask several times if you want to continue, always answer yes, else the program will abort\close.

There are two versions of the patch available: steam (for the downloaded game) and box (retail). In the box version you get normal and gold (kingdoms included in the box instead of purchased separate). Check which version you have and then look for the right patch.
