Firing Range?

Thread: Firing Range?

    Default Firing Range?

I am wondering if there has been any mention of some manner of visual clue to represent the range of your units.

So perhaps a button on the units menu that will cause a red-circle to pop up showing the maximum range of the unit. Perhaps there could be inner circles too, to represent increases in accuracy. Say... Red = Maximum, Yellow = Medium and Green = Near.

I don't think there is much need because when you select a unit next to your mouse icon there's like a green and red thing which tells you and that's enough.

Lol, actually never played it. Just something I really wished to have in Total War (along with a bombardment button, just something nice about setting all your artillery to bombard a area while the enemy approaches it).

I was thinking more if say you want to make sure that all your artillery for instance begin to bombard at the same time, or that your riflemen won't be placed short of range. Which be extra important if you wanted to bunker them in buildings and wait for enemies.

CA did anounce that you could order artillery to attack an area if you ordered. But yeah the range thing is in your curser, and there would be to much mess on the battle field if there were more green circles all over the place, god for bid.

I agree that having the artillery fire not at an area, but target an area and fire when an enemy is recognized as entering that area, is a very good idea. It would work well with the "Don't fire until you can see the white of their eyes" tactic, because it just simply won't be effective if you can't account for how fast the animation before firing takes without needless attention to detail.

But what if you just continuously bombarded a valley to stop the enemy flanking you, you would want to be continuously bombarding the area to obliterate the enemy. And I think CA have confirmed that you can just attack an area rather then having to attack the enemy.

There was mention in either one of the FAQ's or Previews that there would be an ability to display a selected units range of fire in a better way than the cursor. Possibly similar to the Cossacks series? I do remember reading that, now if I can just remember where!

they did mention the representation of visual clue to represent the range of your units in the IGN preview. although i don't think it will be Red = Maximum, Yellow = Medium and Green = Near. at least i hope not...it's exactly similar to the Cossacks game series.

I just hope that some consideration is given to ranges. If your units halt to fire as soon as they are in range, their fire should be very poor. I would like there to be at least three graduations of range/effectiveness. Long-very ineffective but over time a demorilizing effect. Intermediate-moderately casualty producing and more impact on enemy morale. Close-potentially devastating and only very solid veteran units could stand up to close fire without breaking and running for any amount of time.

    Like Dawn of War?

When you select the attack button a red circle appears that shows the unit's range of fire.

In Supreme commander you could achieve the same thing.

IIRC CA not only promised a feature that displays range, but the far more useful field of fire. Good for spotting any awkward dips in the land that your attacker can shelter in.
Far more relevant now that almost all weaponry has a fairly flat trajectory.

that would be cool but maybe red/green will be enough?

Not really. I'd hate to mouse over every inch of terrain to make sure I don't miss any gap in my defences.
