    Default Ship Shape

Do you think that ships will be like castle/city walls, in that they retain the damage they sustain in battle? I know that ships could repair damage to some extent, so do you think that will be represented? Or will ships only be repaired once retrained? I also think it would be cool if a ship could pick up more sailors (lost in battle) when in a friendly port with out having to retrain the entire ship. just some thoughts...

I think it should be possible to repair a small ammount while out at sea, say perhaps 5% of the ship's overall hitpoiints but need to be in port to repair properly.

thats what i though also... new sails, put out fires (kinda important lol), and some damage patched over. i just think it would add a lot to the feel of the game esp. if you could pick up more sailors at ports.

So if our ship gets a hole in its hull and water gets in, is it doomed?

That's usually the way things go yes, unless they can patch it up somehow temporarily.

or as a special ability the ship could be purposely sunk
kinda like they did in WW1 and 2 to make it so that the enemy cant claim them or theyre secrets

lol thats a good question! maybe instead of a battle special ability it could be a way of disbanding the unit/ship

how many sailors are going to be fine with sinking their own ship dooming themselves out at sea? lol Reminds me of the elephant units in rtw where the rider always died along with the elephant.

Don't think the cold hearted A.I. will care just as long as you don't get there ship. Could we save the sailors though?

Well many ships had a Carpenter on board, not to mention extra sails and masts, so if you should be able to patch some of your ship and before you get into port.

Alot of the suggestions here you might see in the forms of technology you can progress through in the tech tree. Spend a bit extra in technology so you dont have to spend a bit extra at port.

A ship should be able to repair simple little things to keep the ship a float, but yes they should keep the damage and same look if they get cought up in another battle. And I am hopping that friendly ports will be able to be used to fix and repair your ships!

@robo ive been hoping that would be true for a while. i think that even i M2TW you should have been able to at least hide or dock in a friendly port, but unfortunately you can only blockade them.

They said a while back that this won't be in the game for "gameplay" reasons, (and then of course the moaning ensued), so unfortunately no.

    oh well
its understandable because it might be hard to do the difference between blockading and docking in an allied port. i would stink to blow a very important alliance just because of a silly mistake during the game

maybe they could do something for the larger ships where damage is organized into categories, which ultimately determine the ship's capability. For example, mast damage and stuff can reduce movement distance, obviously cannon damage reduces combat efficiency, and things like that. Obviously this would not apply for all ships, but if you could build like a flagship for a navy this would apply. As for repairs, I would think that an upgrade would let you make small repairs at sea, while full repairs would have to be done at a port. im also interested to see how they mix it up terrain-wise, maybe CA could include weather, like clear skies or stormy or windy climates and things to influence ship movement.
