    Default Adding files to Retrofit Mod

    I've used Retrofit as a base kingdoms mod folder for my mod. All I've done by now is change the map and take away numerous factions so I haven't really messed with anything outside the world folder. Anyway I decided to change the colour of Byzantium so added descr_sm_factions to my folder but as soon as I did my mod wouldn't even get to the main menu. It would just stop just before I reached the loading screen. Not even an specified error. I take descr_sm_factions out and it works fine.

    Why?

    Cool. What does the error log say?
    Take away factions? From descr_strat? Better make them unplayable after removing their entries as the descr_sm_factions refers to them. And so does the EDU and EDB.

    Factions have been deleted out of descr_strat and it worked fine. Making them unplayable now will mean adding them again. Could it be that by adding descr_sm_factions I've triggered problems elsewhere like in EDU?

    Invalid ownership type 'moors' found in unit 'baghlah'.
    13:12:44.454 [data.invalid] [error] DATABASE_TABLE error found : error reading record from file mods/ByzMod/data/export_descr_unit.txt.
    Exactly the type of error you can expect when you "take out factions".
    This is how the game works: the EDB (export_descr_building) file checks the recruitable units against entries in the EDU (export_descr_units) file. Which in turn checks the faction ownership against entries in descr_sm_factions.
    Still with me?
    So follow my advice from the previous post: restore the original descr_sm_faction and change only the color of Byzantium, nothing else.

    Descr_sm_faction takes one entry.
    EDU and EDB take about 100 entries each (per faction)
    And then there are another 10 files or so.
    Sure you want to do that?

    First change the way your log reports in your mod's cfg file:
    Code:
    [log]
    to = logs/system.log.txt
    level = * error
    Now you will get only fatal error messages like the one I picked out of the mile long log you posted. And they will be in the \logs directory, NOT in the root directory.

    To get an idea what you are gettring in, I would suggest to do a TEXT search in the data directory for txt files with the word "aztecs" in them.
    If that doesn't deter you then start by removing one faction from descr_sm_factions and see where the log leads you.

    I'm a fair way through the EDU at the moment so I know I've got a lot to do but when I started I knew I'd have to do a lot of long laborious work. The way I see it, the simpler I make it now the nicer it will be to make it more complex later.

    Rebel factions are kind of linked to factions. There is a line in which is says "subfaction hungary" for instance, hungary being a faction. If you have deleted the faction in descr_sm_factions then this subfaction can't exist either.
    I told you this goes deep, didn't I?

    Well this shouldn't be a problem because the factions the rebels should be subfactions of I kept. For instance it is telling me it can't find 'Greek_rebels' or 'Anatolian_rebels' and yet I kept Byzantium and the Turks. If I have deleted the necessary factions then I'll have to redirect the subfactions.
    It's this line in the error log that is confuddling me most though:

    rebel unit type 'Peasants' not available to faction type 'brigands' (see unit ownership)
    I release the problems with doing this but it is necessary in the long term.

    This file describes the rebels that can spawn in your territory\regions due to unrest. Seems you removed the peasant unit from the EDU.
    The greek_rebels and anatolian_rebels are in the same file.
    If you are redoing all those rebels (they are linked to descr_regions entries) my suggestion is to simply delete the units from the list and leave the other entries.

    Actually I've just solved that problem. (I always post too soon!) I hadn't deleted Steppes_rebels from rebel_faction_descr. As a result it seemed to ignore the file. What confused me was that I assumed what you've just thought but it didn't seem to be true.

    If you are redoing the rebel_factions file don't forget the related file in the data\text folder.
    One hint: if you delete rebel factions that are mentioned in the descr_regions file you will have an error. You will have to keep one rebel faction (I usually use english_rebels) to use in the descr_regions. Find and replace is your friend here!

    No problems in descr_regions.
    I've cleared everything up in the error log but now it's not reaching the main menu any more because something is causing an unspecified error. Could this be because of a file I need to copy into my mod folder or could it be the rebel_descr_faction.txt.strings.bin? I don't really understand how it works. I've never had a problem with imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names, but I tried alpaca's strings.bin converter but that doesn't change anything {unless I'm using it wrongly...). Any ideas?

    Step by step:
    1. Don't worry about string.bin files, they get created if the corresponding txt file changes.
    2. imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names is the lookup file for descr_regions
    3. Alpaca's converter works by converting existing bin files into txt files. If you have used it after changing txt files but before starting a new game then you are back to square one. Check your txt files for the changes you did.

    Right ok. Must be something else. I noticed I haven't changed the export_units in the text folder so I'm doing that. Could take a while.

    In my opinion you don't have to change anything in the data\text folder as long as you remove entries somewhere. Only when you add things will you have to work with these files.

    I hadn't deleted Steppes_rebels from rebel_faction_descr
    Check if you haven't got an entry for steppes_rebels in descr_regions (search)

    In the descr_rebel_factions are some lines with 'brigands' 'pirates' and 'gladiator uprising'. Don't remove them, they are necessary for the game play. If you did, restore from an original file.
    That might have caused the error message about the ' faction brigands'.
