Default The most tragic crusade ever...

I thought it'd be a good idea to send a crusade to egypt, I told myself that if i was going to do it, i would do it right. So I went along making the most advanced army I could, put my best general behind it and threw them on a boat bound for jeruselm.

About 10 turns pass, and I start to get excited cause my fleet is one turn away from jeruselm...your thinking im gonna say the egyptians sink the fleet...oh no, much better, my general dies on the boat of natural causes. It tells me that unless my army rejoins a crusade...they're going to rout. rofl my best army is going to rout one turn from the holy land and theres nothing I can do about it. ok fine its pretty funny.

Lesson to be learnt- Don't send grandpa to the crusades

Anyway tough going especially the rout thing

What's even worse is that if you brought a catapult with you and your general would have made it over there alive, you'd have taken it the same turn.

i've always joined crusades with at least 2 generals, yet im recently considering to make it 3 generals since i have so far failed 3 crusades with 2 generals each....

1st crusade: one dies of old age, one gets killed by inquisitor -.-
2nd crusade: they both contact the plague (enemy spy ?!) without actually entering a settlement and die :/
3rd crusade: one dies of old age and the other dies from a storm at sea

soooo now i'll either abandon crusades or save the game before joining one to reload if everything goes to $)%*#$^@

p.s.: the 3 crusades mentioned above happened with 3 different factions, if they happened with the same faction i'd swear that that faction is cursed
There is nothing that can match the exuberance of youth.... except of course, wisdom and treachery.

Yeah, never send an old man to a crusade, had that happen to me the first time I played this game and refused to go on crusades after that for weeks. Its also a lot of fun when you are on crusade and trying to cut through Europe to get to the Med to hire ships and your army keeps going back and forth in the mtns above Italy and keeps getting blocked on one pass by a diplomat and another pass by 3 HRE troops and you start loosing troops to desertion. Then to add insult to injury your general kicks the bucket

Definitely take 2 or 3 generals on Crusades next time.
You never know what may happen. Died in battle, assassinated, killed in storm, killed by the plague, died of natural causes, joined the rebels, excommunicated, etc.

OK, I have to chime in here because ALOT of you do not know how to crusade.
First and foremost, if you have a faction heir or a very young king (35 no older) make sure you send them on the crusade. You get rediculious amount of command and chivalry for winning the crusade. If your king and or your faction heir are already well set for stats send in the youngest general you can find. This way you can build up a superhero of a general while their young and get many many years of conquest with them. In addition to that if you like bring another general with them (younger the better) Once the crusade is over send your winning general that got all the chivelry back to you kingdom and send the other general on a sack, and exterimante campaign. You will end up with a HIGH command and Dread general

It's like history is repeating itself through historical computer games!
Well not really... But close enough! It's Barbarossa all over again. ^^
During the time of the 3rd, Barbarossa who was at that time the holy roman emperor, sent what was probably the largest crusading force ever to the holy land, and he himself was leading it... He drowned on his way there while crossing a river. His army, now leaderless, disolved and only a mere 5 000 men reached the holy land, out of the original 100 000 that took up the cross. Tough luck!

After losing 2 crusading armies in a row, in my first M2TW game, because the general died enroute; I vowed to always have at least 2 generals in each crusading stack.

The simply solution is to not take generals that are 400 years old on crusades. I've never had that problem because I only take young healthy generals on crusades.

To be fair when I started training the army he was only like 35. Probley the most ironic part of the whole thing, was half way across the medditeranean the fleet carrying my crusade (5 or 6 ships) crossed paths with an egyptian fleet with a full 20 ships...and he just watched me drift by. I was all like: "WOOO HELLZ YA! STUPID EGYPTIANS! U HAD UR CHANCE UR GOIN DOWN!"

I sent my best general with my best army but sadly had low loyalty and became a rebel 1 turn before reaching Antioch.

Makes me feel a lot better .

Playing as Denmark I decided I'd curry favour with the Pope for a change but he called a crusade against Antioch way early in the game & I just managed to cobble together 11 units of mostly low grade troops. All but 3 crappy Spear Militia units deserted en route and I'd accidentally left my spy behind when I split the fleet to set off to the holy land. Trying to reduce the 6 (unknown) units of Egyptians in the city by seige was not a brilliant idea either I was, of course, attacked from the rear by a bloody great stack from Acre.

A bit later a crusade is called against the french (at war with the Papals) at Toulouse. This time I had a proper army at my disposal and only 3 moves to the target. 2 moves later the Pope (aged 49) dies - the new Pope immediately reconciles with France and calls off the crusade leaving a quarter of my army stuck in hostile territory. I think I might just try and assassinate the senile old nit!

Has anyone been attacked at sea under these circumstances? I've gone off on quite a few crusades (mostly medium difficulty) in the holy land and sailed serenely past superior enemy fleets without hindrance. On the other hand - trying to march overland to a crusade against Frankfurt in one campaign, a full stack of my best was chopped to pieces by repeated assaults from the HRE (admittedly they did have sizeable empire to cross and a huge army).

In my first campaign and my first crusade I sent my crusading English army by boat to Jerusalem lead by my King. I was attacked my a rebel fleet in the Med and all hands were lost

So your King and the entire army were lost at sea? Ouch.

Reminds me of the time, as Venice, I sent Cristiano and his men out of Crete. They were bound for Antioch... on a single mercenary galley. Bad move. Pirates spawned nearby and sunk 'em. I ended up abandoning the crusade.

On my very first campaign (as England), I sent them by ship toward Jerusalem, but the ol' try-to-get-around-Iberia-but-you're-right-next-to-the-shore-and-they-all-abandon-the-crusade trick got me. And then, when I landed my general in Moorish territory - to keep him from dying at the hands of pirates - those damned Moors attacked him, forcing him onto the single cog. Then a couple of Moorish dhows attacked and, well, you can figure out the rest on your own.

Now THAT'S the most tragic crusade ever, I daresay.

Once when I was playing as England in Vanilla, i'd conquered the British Isles and France and was sitting back waiting for an excommunication that wouldn't come. I got bored waiting, and got the Pope to declare a Crusade to Turk controlled Constantinople (iirc).

Not wanting to risk my Crusade on a ship, I made him march all the way through Germany to get there. Then, halfway through, the Germans attacked me, I fought them off easily enough but no excommunication.

Then, as my Crusade just reached Vienna, an army of two units that was hiding in the woods ambushed me. Instant excommunication. Needless to say the HRE didn't last long after that.

And the HRE didn't get excommunicated by attacking a Crusading army? I always get a warning message saying I'm going to be excommunicated if I attack a crusading army, even if I have outstanding/perfect relations with the pope.
