    Default Vassals

How in the world do you get vassals? I'm playing as Denmark on H/H and am rated 1 everywhere except military, Norway started to piss me off by always attacking me, so they had like 2 towns while I had over 20. They had Stockholm and Oslo. I took Stockholm, and decided to send a diplomat to try to get them to become my vassal....even if they are bankrupt and have 1 region left....they refused. What the hell?

I've had this same problem, as Byzantines I faught a long war with Hungary. I beat them, took half their provinces, with 3 left to them I invaded their remaining land and rather than destroy them I tried to make them a vassal, as a buffer from enimies on my northern borders, they wouldnts accept. I dont think I've ever had anyone accept vassalage.

I had the aztecs as vasalls once, so it IS working, but only very rarely. They need to be broke and battered and whatnot until you can even try. And if they don't accept it on the first time it will most likely not work the second time either.

I agree w/ Overkill...that or reduce them to 1 harmless territory (I like to give them a province way off on the opposite side of the map and take their home territories).

The problem with vassalage in DLV is the money infusion script - you're entitled to a % of your vassal's income, yet when a faction is small enough to reduce to vassalage (1 or 2 settlements), DLV's script kicks in, which loads them w/ $ to help them survive. If they're your vassal you get a game-unbalancing amount of money. I'm not sure if this feature may have even been made impossible in later versions because of this.

If an enemy comes to me to demand I be their vassal, I refuse and ask them instead. If they refuse I send my assasain after them when they leave. Yes and I agree with the destroying thing. I have never really asked the AI to be my vassal, party because they never accept, and partly because I'm too busy pillaging and burning.

Conquer all their cities but one, let them be for couple of turns and send a diplomat never offer city or money. I find it AI is sutpid in H mode.

As much as I like to destroy other factions sometimes I manage to force them to become my vassals. The easiest way to do it is to take all but one of their provinces. Then send huge army or armies to their territory but do not attack. Then send diplomat and propose "partnership". Usually they accept.
I have an interesting story regarding so called "partnership" with Lithuanians. They were my vassals for approx 30 turns when there was a Crusade called upon them. As good ally I decided to defend them. So there we were ...in war with every catholic faction. For more then 10 turns I repel attack after attack ...ahh...so many glorious battles were won...but at the end Lithuanians were crushed along with some of my armies. So they lost their province and escaped to my lands. Eventually I managed to retake their province and decided to keep it. I though Lithuanians will take some rebel provinces but they just remained on mine lands. After ten more turns they attacked one of my cities and took it. I got mad off course and destroyed them after all .
So you see destroying other factions is better than making them vassals.

Im playing VH/VH. After reading your replies went back and put a beating to Hungary. They were down to 3 provinces, so i went in, put armies next to 2 of them (not sieged so i wouldnt have to deal with garrison script). Then I sieged their Capitol (Buda) which then became garrisoned by an almost full stack. With my catapults I was able to assault imidiatly, took the fortress and rased all its buildings. Then I offered it back to them in return for vassalgae, and the accepted!! Yay.

Too bad the next turn when I declared war on their allies, Venice. they broke the vassalage/alliance with me! This should be looked at, a people recently forced into vassalage should break there alliance with an older ally, not vassalage/alliance with their new master. It doesnt make sence, this should be looked at.

Bah, was gonna reply, then saw the smiley face, go pound sand, Leonnidas, lol.

Im just saying, breaking a vassalage/alliance to me just like it was a choice between any two allies going to war, isnt realistic.
