Ok, Any game that plays in space goes in this thread.

Many of you might not care much, but the space-simulation-trade-shooter-exploration-rpg was always a stront backbone of PC-gaming.

Latest greatest is of course Mass Effect, although I was quite disappointed of the exploration part of it and it's not really a space game at all.

Here is a list what you should check out (many bargains), if you feel like playing something that involves flying around in space and doing stuff there:

    My mix:
    (many bargain bin titles)

    Evochron Renegades (
    Galactic Civilizations II.
    Freelancer
    Dark Star One
    Spaceforce: Rouge Universe
    Freespace 2
    Independence War 2
    X-Series (Egosoft)
    X-Wing Alliance
    Tachyon : The Fringe

Post more if you know more.

The same guy. Though the point still stands

I'm still waiting on something that captures the sheer freedom of the X-series, the ease of functionality and depth of setting of Freelancer and the frenetic dogfights of the original Xwing and Tie Fighter games. A game that combines these for me would be close to gaming nirvana.

One to watch out for is Precursors. It's being developed by the guys that did the admittedly incredibly buggy game Boiling Point, so it could well end up being similiar - with bugs ruining a game with incredible potential. Combining space combat and FPS action planetside, in a freeform universe it could prove very interesting. But probably buggy. I can't emphasise that enough

Imperium Galactica 2, Birth of the Federation and the Wing Commander series are all pretty good (if old).

Galactic Civilizations 2 is proving to be quite hard to get hold of these days. I would've liked to get it until I played the demo and didn't think much of it.

Conflict: Freespace (prequel to Freespace 2)
Empire at War (the space part is the best anyway )
    Haegemonia: Legions of Iron
Homeworld Cataclysm (as 1 and 2 have been mentioned by VOP2288)
    Starlancer
    Startopia
    StarTrek Armada series
StarTrek Bridgecommander (that's what Gungalley meant I suppose)
    StarTrek Starfleet Command series

Is there a game out there that you have a battleship like Battlestar Galactica and you control only that battleship and level it up with experience?

Theres a star trek game that lets you control the USS Enterprise only and you have to kick other ships' asses. Can't remember the title.

I have X3 and was attempting at learning how to play it. I knda stopped because I got Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and thats been taking up all my gaming time recently. I wish I had my old joystick, I gave it to my dad and he lost it. It was the Saitek that had a blue base and came with a throttle too, it was so awesome for these space sims. X-Wing Alliance was one of my favs to HA, I've been playing the games in that series since I was a little kid.

X3 plays pretty well with just keyboard and mouse. Then again, I always enjoyed the economy side of the game a lot more than the dog fighting.

If you pick it up again and need any help figuring the game out (the learning curve is ridiculously steep) let me know.

I wouldn't mind it. I won't be too serious about it because I am about to ship out, but I still have a few weeks before then. I've already beat VTMB, so I'd be willing to try x3 again.

Homeworld 1 and 2, amazing games...really hard further along the campaign but very fun if you don't become overly frustrated first.

That blew me away. "Turn on the TV," he'd say. "What are you seeing? People selling their products? No. People selling the fear of you having to live without their products." freakin' A, was he right. Fear of aging, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty, fear of failure. Fear is the most basic emotion we have. Fear is primal. Fear sells.” WWZ

I loved Star Wars: TIE fighter. I even installed it again last year to play the missions again. I have the expansion pack and strategy guide and everything. Simply a spectacular game in terms of game play and storyline. One of the granddaddys of space shoot-em-ups. Too bad it's a genre that's all but died out.

Freelancer is a pretty cool space game, and well thought out too. I remember downloading a conversion mod that allowed you to play on a server with 100+ other regular users and going around pirating n' stuff.

No idea, I can't remember whether I installed it on my laptop when it was running Vista or XP. Probably XP.
