This is my favourite beatle.
As for the mop-tops, well Paul likes himself so much he doesn't need any help from me, while John inhabited a spiritual realm beyond considerations of mere like and dislike. So I think I would plump for George (he wrote more songs than Ringo anyway).
You may need to extend your Poll list a bit.
Apart from John, Paul, George and Ringo, there were also apparently several dozen potential 5th Beatles (enough for an infestation worthy of the attentions of Rentokill)
Here are the strongest candidates:
- Stuart Sutcliffe
- Pete Best
- Brian Epstein
- George Martin
- Neil Aspinall
- Derek Taylor
- Tony Sheridan
- Billy Preston
- Jimmy Nicol
Aw, it's no contest. George Martin did more than the rest of those guys combined, he is the only true Fifth Beatle.
Isn't that a 'beetle'?
Anyway, it is George Harrison, if for no other reason than lack of involvement with either Yoko, Wings or Octopus's Garden.
George Harrison, because McCartney is too self-obsessed, and Lennon was too crazy
What's with Octopus's Garden?
How to tell a Beatles fan:
When asked which one is their favourite, instead of answering John, Paul, George or Ringo, they reply 'Fred Bloggs' *Commence tale that actually links the seemingly random name with the band*...
John Lennon was the Beatles... so I'm going to have to say John Lennon.
Haha, George Martin all the way (their producer)
Edit: Poor Ringo, nobody votes for him (myself included), but I contend that if he weren't around, the Beatles wouldn't have been nearly as accessible and thus wouldn't have been as popular :\

Well, Sutcliffe and Best were the only ones who actually WERE in the band itself, so technically - not contribution-wise or anything - they would be foremost amongst the nomination.
I do think Martin was their greatest benefactor, however... every single one of those albums was a masterpiece thanks to him... even Let It Be, before Phil Spector royallyed with it.

George is my favourite Beatle, followed closely by John.
As for the "Fifth" Beatle, the only two real contenders are George Martin and Billy Preston (rip)

RINGO!!!!!!!
George Harrison because of the sitar/ Tomorrow Never Knows/ Within You Without You.
John, though he was the biggest prick of them all.
Gotta be George Harrison. He "got it" about the music and was far ahead of his time in terms of musical composition and lyricism. I really admire his influence on the Beatles' work and also upon how music since then has gone. When you look at folk signers who cite the Beatles as their influence, they are really talking about Harrison.
Wow, you guys really like Georgie... nobody likes the ones who are still alive, eh?
After much deliberation, I voted for John, just because overall he's the most awesome per capita. But I appreciate them all for their individual contributions to their collective work, which, without any of them, would be far different.
