Default Patch 1.2 problem - "no version of Medieval II: Total War is installed"

Did a search and couldn't find anyone else here with the problem, sorry if I'm being dense...

I tried to run the 1.2 patch and it came up with a message complaining that "The setup has detected that no version of Medieval II: Total War is installed" and that "This update requires that a previous version of the application is installed". These are contemptuous lies, the game IS installed, but the patcher doesn't seem to recognise that.

I've tried reinstalling and getting the patch from a different source, but it always comes up with the same problem. I've managed to patch the game without problem on my desktop PC, but the laptop is refusing to co-operate. It's Vista, if that helps.

    Any ideas?

well a few posts earlier I posted having the same exact concern, read some of the solutions people gave to me. Unfortunately none of them worked for me.

Worked for me when I had Vista. Is your game in the dafault location as in C:\Program Files\Sega\Medieval II Total War?

Strangely, the game seems to be elsewhere. Not sure why, but that would appear to be the problem.

    Thanks for the help.
