Isn't it part of the trend of 'safe bets' that is plaguing the film industry. Anything new runs the risk of not making money. You have to emulate that which has proven to be profitable - leading to the unnumbered sequels and prequels (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) that are released as well as those that just run similar themes (Any more comic book characters left?). That, or you are left with blatantly ripping off/copying/'reimagining' films (Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, King Kong..).
It would be interesting to see, if someone compiled a list of films produced within the last 5 - 10 years, how many fall into those 3 categories and how many were 'original' pieces.
Oh, I forgot those films that are based on already popular TV Series, didn't I...
seriously ; it would be grand if people could still come up with original story telling![]()
