Alright so I've been playing SS for a few months now and have tried numerous factions. One thing that I'd like to get a consensus on is the ability of dismounted archers. It seems odd to me that Longbowmen, traditionally using the Bodkin Arrow (long spearlike tip made to punch through armor) has little effect on medium and heavy infantry. I would think the Yeoman and/or Retinue would have armor piercing ability with their high training and use of bodkin. (I only exclude the normal Longbowmen because they come relatively early in the game and would have serious balancing issues if given AP).
I went through the export_descr_unit to see the values and ammo type of most of the archers, untrained to elite. I found that some of the elite archers (ie: dismounted french archers, welsh archers) use the bodkin yet have no AP. This makes no sense whatsoever to me. :hmmm:
Does anyone else feel like dismounted archers are a bit of a joke? I'm testing around with giving some archers AP ability and reducing their overall damage to see how it balances. Give me some thoughts...
At the battle of Agincourt, sources estimate that there were about 5,000 English archers. At a rate of fire of 8 arrows a minute, 40,000 arrows could be loosed each minute! The battle began with dense flights of arrows from the English archers. The heavily armoured French knights replied with a charge, but their horses sank into the muddy ground and their immobility made them an admirable target for their opponents. The battle was decided within about the first half-hour. After the battle, observers wrote that the white feathers from the flights were so thick on the ground, it looked like snow.
