    Default Rebel turn CTD

All right, I know I've been harping on about this in several posts in several threads, but it's pissing me off to no end that there hasn't been a single response. I read through the whole bug report thread for 5.6 and apparently there are a lot of other people who are experiencing the same bug, and it hasn't been acknowledged once.

So I'm wondering if anybody has any idea what is causing the CTD, if anybody knows if it's fixed for 5.7, if anybody knows if it can be fixed for current campaign in progress and anything else pertinent to this game killer.

As I've mentioned, I was able to get past it initially by turning off fow, having follow AI turns on, and sitting through all the factions' turns (you can press space bar to speed up the individual moves). In this way, when it got to the rebel turn, it showed what I think was their capital city I guess, I forgot the name, and then some heretic movements. So I'm guessing maybe it has something to do with something being built or heretics.... possibly...

Problem is, the crash happens almost every turn. So I had to do this method after each turn, which meant it took longer to end the turn than it did to actually do whatever I did during my own turn. But still, I did it because I was having an interesting Irish campaign. Problem is, now it even crashed while doing this method so I'm all out of ideas here.

Sorry I don't know what it is but I have one suggestion. Donload 5.7 beta, install it into some "test" folder, grab description_names.txt (/data) and names.txt (/data/text) from there and overwrite these two files in the 5.6 install. After doing that delete the bin files in the text folder and restart the game.

Repman has checked all the names that were causing crashes (for example scots but also some rebels) for 5.7 and maybe that will help you. Theoretically if you delete the bin files and rebuild them (start a new campaign, hit end turn once, then exit back to menue and load your save) this should be save game compatible too. But I am not sure if that's the cause of the problem.

Meh, I got too frustrated and took too long, so I switched over to SS for the first time.... see what that's all about. I miss DLV but I'm gonna wait it out until the next version and make sure everything is working properly before coming back.

On the bright side, there are a crapload of sub-mods for SS that bring the experience closer to what DLV, at least with regards to the roleplaying elements. Of course, no extra costs and all that good stuff, but it's pretty cool.

Enjoy and let us know how SS plays in comparison . It's weird that som many people report crashes, I have played multiple campaigns, really long ones too, and never had any problem. Maybe the occasional "memory gone cocoo" CTD after a few hours but that's pretty much it. For me 5.6 is the most stable version so far.

Same here. I'm at war with pretty much everybody now and its turned into an interesting battle for survival, but on the turn I'm at now, its pretty much a turning point and I cant bring myself to start again. Guess I might go back to WiC until I get bored of it again.

If only CA had built a game worth playing without mods in the first place...

Qin, you could try the method I mentioned, turning off the fog of war and leaving follow ai turns on. Hopefully that'll get you past this point, at least a few times.... though it's just gonna be a teaser as things get more and more interesting, the crash gets more and more frustrating...

You see the fact that this CTD only happens occasionally is a hint that it could be related to an assigned trait (for example different battle results, different denoucing results). The game wants to give a rebel a trait, could be a heretic or a general, can't find him and then crashes.

When I first made the forts and had the ingenious idea to make the rebels unnamed for "atmosphere" it crashed all the time because of the mismatch in the names and descr_names file.

Try exchanging these files, like I told above, I think it will help.

I got a few more years, then.... I can't even remember the last time a finished a campaign.

Thx anyway Furian. Even if I managed to get it right the first time, which I doubt given my Neanderthal-like PC skills, I can't bring myself to start yet another campaign.
