Default How to never lose a city

How to never lose a city in a few simple steps.

    1. Pick a phalanx faction. (Germania, Seleucids, Greece etc)

    2. Get wooden palisade. Never upgrade your walls past this.

    3. In cities that are under threat from siege, recruit 6 units of phalanx units. (You can usually get away with 3 or 4)

    4. Wait for enemies to siege.

    5. Deploy your phalanx in a 'V' around the gate and any walls the enemy is ramming. If you find you are short of phalanxes, then put a single phalanx block instead of a 'V' to guard a less threatened section of wall.

    6. Click start battle.

    7. Wait for enemies to die.

(Yes, the fifth phalanx is sitting there doing nothing.)

    8. Heroic Victory.

    Have fun!

Kind of like picking on a retarded kid with the computer though huh?
That being said, I had a mean semi-circle formation that destroyed pre-Marian Rome when I played as Greece through.

How do you think the attacking enemy feels about walking over a 10 foot tall wall of dead companions? Seriously, what would 1,100 bodies look like piled up in 2 gaps of a wall? War is rough!

Takes the fun out of city defences methinks! I prefer to have a little more fun with my enemy!

    As do I...

In a recent defense against the Egytpians... I sat back and allows my 2 orangers and 2 archer units placed so that the single road they would march down would be bombared with artillary... they lost almost 30% of there army just getting down one road. then I used my Cohorts to skwewer them with javilins (another 10 percent) then the entire army broke and my cavalry got like 2 chevrons of exp each just chasing down and killing everything that moved...now thats a fun way to spend 15 mins

I myself block chokepoints around town square.
The enemy never runs whiel amrching, so they just stroll through the enitre city getting shot to death and then they meet my phalanx and die or rout in three seconds flat.

I do that sometimes, but then the AI is always a sucker when it comes down to sieges

I have played against V formation before. Just use scorpions and other artillery. Also, keep a steady barrage from archers, and keep a few scary units (head hurlers or elllies) nearby. Once they take enough death, they rout and you just stroll through.
Or make too many holes in the walls for v to work.

That is a good strategy as well. I have used it against noobs online!
Or a nice charge of cataphracts works.
Once the AI did that in a campaign to me, but it only had militia hops, so a pilum charge wrecked it.

Good strategy. I use one similar.

These pictures pretty much summed up my entire Macedon campaign past the point where I had taken Rome and was taking stack after stack after stack of Briton troops attacking crappy barbarian palisade villages. That tactic wins battles, sure, but it's boring as hell to watch the enemy to crumble against your pikes. It's even more boring when it's Romans that attack because they take longer to die and there's this constant clanking when the spears batter Roman armour endlessly.

This is also an effective tactic as the Julii against Britons. Principes or legionaries, and that is all you need.

    Clever boy!

Now go play Metro-Naval, and realise that the true art is not getting your cities seiged in the first place.

    It's a sub-mod for RTR : Platinum.

It encourages a more active defense of settlements, as only major cities are allowed walls (historically not every village and town had walls protecting them). This means that most settlements can be assaulted immediately, and so is a good step away from Rome : Total Siege.

It also makes things easier for Horse Archer factions.

How to never lose a city:

Invest heavily in economy in the early game.
Invest heavily in economy in the mid-game.
Go on vigorous offense early; using your superiour troop numbers and quality to terrorize your neighbors, and ensure that all battles for cities are fought with your enemy starting INSIDE the city walls.
