Default [IB AAR] EXSURRECTAE AQUILAE - RIO's BRG WRE 434AD aar

ROMA - DIES MERCURII I IANUARIUS MCLXXXVII A.U.C. vel ANNO DOMINI CDXXXIV P.CH.N.

Heavy and dark clouds announce the new 434AD year.
In a palace on the Mons Palatinus something very important and vital for the Roman Empire… the West Roman Empire (since division by Diocletian on 285AD) is happening. Several men quickly and stealthy enter in the palace, but by a closer look they can be recognised as the most important exponents of roman policy and economy.
Once all reunited in the main Triclinium, the master of the palace get the attention of those men:
Ave Probi Viri. Those are very dark ages, maybe the darkest Ab Urbe Condita. Imperator Gallus is dead and now Valentinianus, a young boy sixteen years old, rule the empire… that give back power and influence to whom is here, but more confidence to our enemies too. Now look at that map...

    ...several towns in
Gallia, Iberia and Africa revolted and by the way all the lands are dangerous and owned by brigands… that means rich lands lost and makes trade within empire’s towns hardest. Barbarians press the borders, infiltrating and devastating territories, now with quick and little raids, but soon with invasions… that means... useless to remember what happened 25 years ago…

The last words recalls flames, blood, destruction for the Urbs Aeterna in the minds of those men… then one of them:
Do you know what to do or try to do… I suppose…
Learning from our history…again…! - was the reply - Do we remember names like Brennus, Hannibal, Mithridates, Sulla et Marius, Vercingetorix, Surena, Caesar et Pompeius, Octavianus et Antonius, Arminius, Alaricus? Of course that we remember… the deep periods of our history! The fundamental requirements of Roman Society were a firm material foundation and an adapted safety. The goal of our strategic art was to give safety to our people without giving up to the vitality of our economic foundations and without giving up to the stability of a political order. At the beginning we learned the tactical strength, then we added the strategy for wars on a large scale, at the end we added diplomacy and policy. Depending in what we had to face we learned to share and employ swords, eyes, words, blades… creating and keeping the largest and longest empire… but then we forgot all that! "
Again some minutes were left silent to let those men think… then:
    What we have to do?
Employ our money, influence and men all together with same and unique objective! – was the reply - To capture again the lost territories… To reconstruct roads, markets, ports, trades not forgetting law, happiness and health for our people… The Senate have to take back its political power and prestige influence, working on same level with the Emperor and directing properly the acts of the Generals. As in the past after conquest there must be consolidation of economy and safety, and follow the Divide et Impera motto for our enemies and potential enemies and as in the past we have eyes and ears everywhere to employ...
We must swear to work as a unique man for this objective and teach future generations to keep this oath. To rebuild the power and the prestige of the Roman Empire… but beyond the glory of the past!
All those men look each others for several minutes, then like one man they rise and with one voice they swear their loyalty and common objective. Those men goes out as they came, and once alone the satisfied master:
    Ricimer...?
    Magister... “ – replied a diplomat.
Close to Rome there are troops that are almost full trained: bring them to Aetius with those orders. And bring with you also Appius and Ustus: their skills could be useful to Aetius for his task. News from the Empire…?
Bad news Magister… - replied the diplomat starting his report – Arles is under siege by Visigoths and Carthago by Vandals. The revolts in Gallia raise unhappiness in the other towns, but at the moment garrison’s troops and our men are well controlling. In the east Huns seems calm at the moment, but in Siscia there are rioting’s rumours. "
…Carthago and Arles must resist: their ports are absolutely needed! – shout the Magister - Even Siscia have to be kept: Vindobona cannot be left isolated if Siscia revolts. Tell to Aetius to destroy Visigoths in Gallia: we cannot start to recapture towns there with a strong enemy behind… Now go, while I arrange the meeting with the Valentinianus…
Once the diplomat went out, the Magister smiled satisfied:
    " EXSURRECTAE AQUILAE! "

Nice start, hopefully you bring Glory back to the Roman Empire. Though I suggest Romanization early on when you defeat your foes instead of rabid expansion to retake land. I didn't do that and public order isn't at its highest, sadly.

Thanks for suggestions Forsworn. The first objective was to retake towns lost, but Visigoths and Vandals (and Huns maybe...) changed my strategy. Furthermore I have to deeply study the Romanization development :hmmm:..., while taking care of economy, because outside Italy towns have all negative income, excepted Carthage, Vindobona and Salona...

Sometimes an Emperor must allow the slaughter of certain rebellious people.

Though you shouldn't do it too often since it's a rare thing and you'll wish you had the pop later on for future conquests.

    Arles – 435AD.
It is a cold morning, when the citizenhip is woken up by the alert clamours of the sentinels:
THE VISIGOTHS… THE VISIGOTHS… THEY ARE AT THE GATES…!
While the garrison troops run out from barracks and line up, the citizens run to the walls to see… In front of the main gate of Arles a big army of Visigoths with ram, ladders and a tower siege are approaching…
Fear start to twist within people, conditioning the soldiers too… it’s too fresh the memory of the sack of Tolosa, which many citizen found repair in Arles…
They will exterminate all of us… In Tolosa few were saved… We must run away…
Suddenly a strong voice comes from the crowd:
DASTARDS…! FOOLS…! – an old man, uncertain on his legs, avance within the crowd - YOUR ANCESTORS FOUGHT TO CONQUER THESE LANDS. YOUR ANCESTORS WORKED HARDLY TO CIVILIZE THESE COUNTRIES, MAKING THEM RICH AND FERTILE… If they could see you… THEY WOULD BE ASHAMED! Do you want to continuously escape? AT THE WALLS… CITIENS OF ARLES… SOLDIERS OF ARLES… DEFEND YOUR TOWN!
Being ashamed and whipped by the old man’s words, the soldiers run to line up on the walls, while the citizens arrange to help Arles’ resistance…

    While in Carthage – 435AD
… thanks to scouting the Vandals army was detected while approaching to the town, so the garrison’s troops are ready to react to the attack. Bonifatius, the Governor, speak to the soldiers

Legionarios! In front of you the Vandals… Useles to say that we are a Roman oasis in the desert… far from Rome… But this is our homeland… here we are born… here we live… here if needed to defend our homes we can die…! Remember what those barbarians have done in Rome 25 years ago! Fight for your wives, for your sons! KILL ALL THOSE SCUMS!
Like one man the soldiers started to hammer swords on their shields while launching their warcry.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

In Arles, once lined up on the walls, all soldiers stand firm, waiting for Centurion orders.

Sagittarii… your arrows towards the Barbarians pushing the ram! They don’t have to arrive to our gate, while towers act to set afire it! “ A rain of arrows immediately falls down to unarmoured peasants, decimating their lines. Limitanei stand firmly, waiting the stair approaching, waiting for order to start launching their pilums to Visigoths.

The concentration of arrows’ throw succeed to slow down the ram approach, and at the end the flaming arrows from towers set afire it! “ Well down Sagittarii! Now fire at will! Limitanei… Pilums! Send these Barbarians to their ancestors…
Immediately the pilums open large voids within the Visigoths, encumbered by ladders.

In Carthage, Bonifatius, given same order to Sagittarii, exterminating the peasants thanks to the higher experience of his archers. Immediately a second Vandals units started to ran to take the ram.

Sagittarii… exterminate these Barbarians. I don’t want them pushing the ram and break our gates.

Perfect! Set afire! Sagittarii fire at will!
Commander… peasants with ladders are approaching to the right side…
Shift immediately the Limitanei in front the siege tower to face the ladders, while positioning the close Limitanei to face the Vandals from the siege tower! Both they must launch their pilum at will.
Showing their discipline, Limitanei shifted quickly their position, getting their new disposition.

Limitanei just ended to line up, that from the siege tower that Vandals invaded the walls. The fight starts… swords against swords… against shields… pain cries… blood flowing on the walls…
Limitanei! Hold the line! It’s their stronger unit… all the others are weak peasants… look their Generals stays away from the battle. The battle depends from you| If you resist, we will be victorius!

Even in Arles the Visigoths succed to allow their Goth Warriors to invade the walls…

The fight is toughest! Visigoths are more skilled and motivated, but Limitanei hold the line. Killed the main part of the first wave, now Visigoths come few at same time, making easier to be killed.

On the other side the Gothic Warriors coming by ladders, invade walls too, but tired and disheartened by the losses…
Limitanei… your swords are thirsty of their blood… don’t leave them dry! You are defending your houses! Reject those barbarians. Show them that Rome have still soldiers to defend its territories! Let this news fly through the world!
Encouraged by the centurion, Limitanei doubled their strength and will to win… nothing can break their morale now!
Slowly but unrelentingly the losses of Visigoths become indefensible. They look for escaping… but there is no way out… only the death...!

Once noticed that the walls are free from enemies
Legionarios… follow me outside! There is still one enemy to kill… their General!
Immediately the Centurion’s units run outside Arles, firecting towards the enemy geneal unit, standing far from the wall, astonished how his troops were defeated by who he thought weak and easy to win.

it would have been better to bring archers too – think the centurion – but it’s too late now…
Hold the line Limitanei… Stand and wait till they are within your pilum range… NOW! Pierce them!
By the way the Visigoths’ charge is heavy and only few pilums get their target

Limitanei. Don’t let them break your line. Hold… HOLD! Aim to the horses’ leg and eyes… once unseated our skills and number will prevail them. “ The centurion’s suggestion is right, and unseated and less skilled fighting as infantry, Visigoths are quickly eliminated, even showing their worth to the end

WELL DONE LEGIONARIOS! The news of their defeat will raise the morale and trust in all the Empire, convincing all our enemies that we stil have the will of our ancestors.! Now back to our houses… we deserve glory and rest!

Even in Carthage the battle is at its end.

Just the last endeavour Limitanei. The battle it’s almost at its end… and we are winning!
Losses are heavy, but Limitanei resists and at the end they succeed to eject the Vandals coming from siege tower. The others Vandals’ troops made mainly by peasants, looking defeated they more skilled warriors, started to retreat, and their General is obliged to order the retreat.

They are retreating…? They have stolen the glory to kill them all! We should had to go outside and attack them… those enemy left alive will be back tomorrow again… By the way… Legionarios… I am proud of you! You fought magnificently! And I am not a man that compliment easily… You deserve an happy evening and a resting night, my soldiers. Wht’s happened here today will remain in the history of Roman Empire…!

Meanwhile... somewhere in the West Roman Empire...

A Legion disembarks from Prima Classis in South Gallia. It was from a very long time that the heavy steps of a Legion didn’t leave its foorprints on a shore… Legionarios marching, Equites riding, Centurions giving orders, wagons advancing slowly sounds in the air, filling the land of a new athmosphere of strength and power…
Suddenly a voice run within the troops bouncing from one unit to another, until the command unit, growing till shouts and applauses:
AETIUS… AETIUS… The Praefectus Praetoria Galliarum is here…!
A man escorted by veterans knights rides quickly between the troops disembarking. Immediately from the command tent exits Caius Silius, the commander of the Prima Aquila Legion, the first of the new Legion trained in the way of the old Legions, took there to re-establish the power of Roman Empire.

Ave Aetius, Praefectus Praetoria Galliarum! With me the Prima Aquila: its Legionarios are skilled and eager to fight for the glory of Rome at your command.

Ave, Caius Silius, happy to see you and your soldiers… a Legion… complete in all its ranks… at last! It’s from a very long time that Rebels and Visigoths siege our towns and devastate our lands here in Gallia… Now those times are finished! Now Roman’s Aquila flies again high in the sky… ready to claw her enemies…!
Then turning to the quickly lined up Legionarios and Equites:
MILITES! You have covered severals miles to come here… to fight and die…! Heavy campaigns… heavy battles awaits you… OUR lands waited you by a very long time… Now this time is here again! Be proud to march and fight… FOR THE GLORY OF ROME!
Then Aetius enters in the command tent, finding there Ricimer, comfortably supine on a triclinium, drinking Gallia’s wine:
Ave Aetius. I’m really happy to see you again…
Ricimer… my old and trusted friends! What bring you there…?
Victories and glory, Praefectus. Here the orders from Rome, but before there is the Visigoths problem to deal with…
At last they decided… I was really tired to run wherever in Gallia to defend towns and face Barbarians infiltrations! Now with this Legion we can attack, cancel Visigoths from the world and then take back OUR towns! It’s time to go, as this order says… Tolosa…!

Meanwhile again… somewhere else… in the West Roman Empire
    Rome – 435AD

In the Forum of Traianus an old man is waiting for his guest… a very important guest… the new Imperator of West Roman Empire… Valentinianus! With him all the Senatus and along the roads Rome’s people… Then from far away the sounds of applauses and hails announce that the Imperator is arrived in Rome and that is coming… One hour later Valentinianus and his bodyguards enter in the main hall of Traianus’ Forum.

    As Valentinianus dismounted, the Magister:
Ave Imperator of Roman Empire! Ave Valentinianus Augustus! Gladiators’ fights in Colosseum, horse racings in Circus Maximus, festivals and banquets will be arranged to welcome You in Rome.
Ave Patres Conscripti. I’m glad of you words and welcome. By the way… festivals can wait. Now it’s time to take care of My Empire matters… don’t you think…?
Determined and resolved “ – thought the Magister, while the other Senators looks at valentinianus perplexed Then with a smile, he invited Imperator Valentinianus to follow him.
I know that I was not fair, Magister, but it’s from too much time that My Empire doesn’t live… it survive. My dream and will is to unify all the empire under one Aquila, like Augustus… Costantinud the Great… but I am really worried to fail…! What are the news…?
The Magister waited a couple of minutes before to speak, as if he was thinking to the right words to use:
Don’t worry too much, Imperator. At last the luck and the good will of God is helping us… together with soldiers and money! I got the agreement of all and most important men to invest time and money to rebuild the Empire. While we speak roads are rebuilt and trades are working again; happiness, law and health are provided in all our towns; new garrison’s troops are enlisted. Carthage and Arles rejected the siege of Vandals and Visigoths respectively and now I can nearly see Aetius with Prima Aquila directing towards Tolosa...

...the first evidence that Rome is powerful again and ready to show its strength and re-establish Rome’s order and peace. Valentinianus… You will be the Imperator of the new Roman Empire. You will re-build the power and strength of our ancients… BEYOND ROMAN GLORY!

    GALLIA NARBONENSIS - 436AD
Once disembarked and reunited all units, Aetius directs toward Tolosa following the orders received from Rome. Quick and without any enemy found even by scouts, Prima Aquila approaches quickly and starts the siege of Tolosa, poorly defended by few units.

The siege proceeds, but Aetius is restless, feeling the danger... unseen but close… While absorbed in his thoughts, Ricimer enter in the Praetorium
Ave Aetius. No reaction by Visigoths in Tolosa: they are too few to try a sortie. What do you think about a diplomatic action? I am almost confident that they will accept; so we can solve that without losses…
I am worried Ricimer – replies Aetius – I thought that Theodoric would come to help his town, but our scouts didn’t find any enemy’s trace, and they went far from Tolosa in any direction. I feel a danger… like thousands of eyes looking at us, waiting for the right moment to attack, and we would be surrounded…
Our spies don’t report any movement from Burdigala and, as you said, our scouts didn’t…
I know what I’ve said! By the way I’m not calm… This siege is too important as first proof of our reborn power! I can’t risk to be catched here by an incoming army with enemies coming out from Tolosa. We are surrounded by huge and deep forests, where a full army can hide itself: ten men scouting can be heard faraway, and…
… maybe one man not… Appius is also very much skilled as scout, and with a fast horse… “ interrupts Ricimer. Aetius agree with a look, and Ricimer goes out from the Praetorium to speak with Appius.

The night was clear, but Appius can’t see the stars, proceeding dismounted deep in the forest.
Bad task I accepted…the forest is too calm, and that means danger… - thinks Appius – and furthermore I can see ony few steps ahead. I should walk ten meters from a Visigoth army without seeing them… but that means that they cannot notice me too…

Some miles before Appius found fresh horse’ droppings and grooves: feeling that strange he decided to follow, even if the darkness made it really difficult. Leaving his horse and stopping every few steps to listen the forest’s sounds, Appius proceeds for another hour. He decided to climb a little hill, and once reached the top Appius found what he was looking for… a full Visigoth army camped!

…really clever… They even didn’t light fires to stay unnoticed. Let me see how many and which units… six or seven calry units, with about a thousand infantry men. Time to go back…
Appius went back guardedly and when he was sure to be enough far, he started to run. Once reached his horse, he rode fast back to the Roman camp. Once listen all Appius’ report, Aetius ordered to wake up his officers and once reunited in the Praetorium:
I get report from Appius that a couple of hour from here, hidden in the forest, there is a full Visigoth army and I don’t want to know now why our scouts didn’t find it… - said Aetius, and without waiting for a reply – But I want to face them in a field chosen by me, not there with Tolosa’s garrison behind. So wake up all, because we go ontop of a hill not far from here… the right place where to develop my tactic. Last thing: let people in Tolosa notice that we are going away… I feel that they know where the Visigoth army is camped…
Quickly Legio Prima Aquila left the castrum and at dawn reached the hill. Once lined up the soldiers, Aetius had a war council with all cohortes’ officers, to explain the battle tactics:
Basically the battle will develop in this way. The first line by Equites Sagittarii will be lined up ahead the infantry; they have the duty to fire at will, then to retreat as soon as Visigoths will be close to them. That will make Visigoths eager to fight, running up to the hill, especially their cavalry I hope, that will arrive within the Sagittarii range and then within Comitatenses’ pilum range. Comitatenses lined up in one single line will fire one pilum only, booking the second for the infantry. Remaining knights will be taken by our Equites Scutari. After that the infantry, tired for the run, should be within the range of Sagittarii, that will fire to Visigoths’ left flank, hopefully obliging them to direct to our Comitatenses’ left flank, that must hold the line, while our right flank will flank their army and attack even behind if possible. Auxilia palatine will be on reserve.
This is basically my plan, but remember that inventiveness and execution’s rapidity is the key of the victory. So don’t leave any chance to attack the enemy if you will see the possibility to be successful…
As soon as Aetius finished to give dispositions and suggestions for the battle, the Visigoths’ army appeared at the foot of the hill.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Visigoths lined up with infantry in the center and cavalry to both flanks:
Equites Sagittarii advance while firing – ordered Aetius – but I want your arrows to the second line, that will push the first line to run towards you

The Equites Sagittarii succeeded to fire few arrows, that immediately Visigoths’ cavalry started to charge them. Luckily
Visigoths’ cavalry direceted to the left flank of the Roman army carting the infantry too, even if still far from the battle. That
allowed Sagittarii to fire to cavalry at will, while Comitatenses arranged their pilum. The Visigoths’ cavalry seem to not take care of arrows and the pilum danger, going on with their charge unsollicitous of losses. Once again decimated by the pilum fire, the Visigoths, tired and undecided, stopped their charge; Aetius noticed Witiza within them and ordered the Equites Scutarii charge together with his guards.

As soon as the Visigoths noticed the Roman cavalry charge they tried to line up to face it, but nothing can stop the Scutarii and Lateranensis Imperialis Germanicum charge leaded by Aetius. Losses starts to become heavier within Visigoths’ cavalry, but they decided to fight to the death.

In the meantime even Visigoths’ infantry arrived on contact with Comitatenses line, but they had to run up to the hill and under the fire of Sagittarii first and Comitatenses’ pilum too. They are exhausted and dejected, and furthermore the main part of them are Peasants, nothing that could worry the veterans Comitatenses.

A strong charge would have easily defeated those Peasants, but the discipline of the Comitatenses obliged them to hold the line, obliging Visigoths to fight without noticing what is happening behind them.

The officers of the four Comitatenses’ Cohortes of the right flank, remembering the words of their Consul, see the opportunity to attack Visigoths on flank and even behind, and they started to advance to complete the encirclement to completely destroy the Visigoths’ army (even if they do that too slowly as emphasized by Aetius after the battle…)

In the meantime Aetius chasing Witiza, reached the Visigoths’ Leader and they starts to fight eachother. By the way the fight eagerness of Aetius is too strong for Witiza: he quickly and continuously hammer Aetius, that succeed to block Witiza sword with his shield. It’s fantastic to see the art of fighting of these two men made by blocks and lunges. No one of the other knights try to take part of this fight. At the end Witiza canted by the umpteenth hammer is without defense, and Aetius quickly sink his sword in Witiza body… moments of silence and immobility, while the soul leave the body… and Witiza glides from his horse…
Immediately the notice of Witiza death cover all the Visigoths’ army, and they seems to stop fighting, undecided to escape or to fight to the death.

The four Comitatenses’ cohorts in the meantime are completing the encirclement (running this time…), while the other four cohorts starts to advance pressing closer the enemy

Heavy losses, their leader’s death, the notice of the incoming cohortes completely dishearten the Visigoth’s, that like one man starts to retreat… then to escape… but at this moment the roman trap is closed for the main part of the Visigoths.

Even the decimated Visigoths’ cavalry starts to escape, quickly chased by Scutarii. Aetius with a quick look at the battle, get the complete photo of the enemy route:
Equites leave their knights to escape… they are few now and they will be not a worry anymore…! But there are more soldier to chase and kill…!

Following the Leader’ orders Scutarii and Lateranensis directs toward the escaping infantry men. The Roman knights forgetting the fatigue started the massacre of the escaping Goth’s Raiders…

… while also the Comitantenses still hungry of Visigoths’ blood started to chase them…

… killing and killing and killing…

At this point Aetius stopped the Comitatenses (not so happy of this order…), leaving the hunt to Equites Sagittarii, Scutarii and Lateranensis

This is the end of the enemies of Rome! Escape cowards… Go back to your home and tell what happens to whoever will face the Roman power from now on!!!

Few Visigoths succeeded to escape from the battle field – said Aetius – once the Prima Aquila was lined again in front of him – I am proud to lead brave Legionarios like you. You fought very well and with the discipline due to a Roman soldier (even if four Cohortes noticed a very disappointed look from Aetius…). The Visigoths escaped are going to Tolosa for sure and I want to arrive to Tolosa together with the news of their defeat. I know that you want rest, but I ask you a last effort and I assure you that you will have soon your due rest inside Tolosa!

    TOLOSA - 436AD
Back quickly to Tolosa the Legio Prima Aquila started to arrange the siege gears, to capture this town, the first of the recaptured towns of the known world for the glory of the Roman Empire.

Aetius offers to Athalric to surrender, but after Athalric’s refuse, he decide to attack. Too big is the difference by number, by the skills, by the morale between the two armies. Visigoths fight with fortitude and determination… but they are not enough against arrows, pilums, swords of the Legio Prima Aquila

The town is easily captured, all Visigoths killed. Aetius after participating to the battle in Tolosa’s streets (as usual always in first line…), in the main square, looking at his men:
    Now, we can rest…
Applauses, warcries, shields stroke by swords fill all the streets of Tolosa.
It is from a very long long time that Roman armies don't lift their banners as sign of victory!

    Thanks a lot Mr Cursed!
Rio made a great work with Beyond Roman Glory Mod. He gives the feeling and status of "darkness" and difficulties to manage factions in this period. To find the right balance between money, your people happiness and armies enlisting for defense and attack it's a very hard task.
I really suggest to play it... !

Eh...I don't really get non mod-switcher mods...do they just overwrite all your files?

Plus, I found Rio's instructions to be rather difficult to understand.

I red about problems found by other players that have installed the mod-switcher version and then switched to RAR release. I've always installed and played Rios' mod-switcher version from when it was firstly released. Even BRG works right in its "rio" directory as you can see by my AAR.
I'm thinking if making a copy of the "bi" folder, renaming it as "rio" and then copy inside files of RAR version could work :hmmm:... I am almost confident that I will not succeed, but I will try and then let you know... and maybe clear install instructions ...

The only way to install Rio's BRG Mod without overwriting all files is the mod-switcher release. I was immodest thinking that my idea it was not already thought and/or tried by Rio or someone else... I made several trials but I didn't succeed ... Better to focus on Exsurrectae Aquilae, but after few days of vacations ...

    ROME - 435 AD

All the streets of Rome resounds of people jubilant. Inside the Arenas continuous gladiators fights and horse racings amuse the population. Romans are celebrating the marriage of Valentinianus, Imperator of West Roman Empire.

Inside Emperor’s Palace all the Roman’s nobility is celebrating the Imperator Valentinianus and his wife Atia. Dances, richest foods, music…
The Magister enter the main room and once get a goblet of wine and after got silence from the guests, he announced:
ROMANI…! The Praefectus Aetius send his gift to Imperator Valentinianus… the town of Tolosa! After winning a huge Visigoths army and a successful siege, he get back Tolosa as part of the Great West Roman Empire! Honour and glory to our brave and valiant men!
HONOUR AND GLORY… - is the shout that resounds within all people – HONOUR AND GLORY…
The Magister approaches to Valentinianus and whispering to him:
“ Imperator… there should be others matters to discuss… “
Not now Magister – interrupts Valentinianus – this night the Empire must celebrates all those great news… Tomorrow Magister, come and we will discuss about, but tomorrow…
    The morning after.
I was expecting you earlier Magister – said Valentinianus – the matters seems so urgent…
I just wanted that my Imperator appreciates more the marriage delights… “ replied the Magister.
Nice care… - said valentinianus smiling - but which are those so important matters...?
After the capture of Tolosa the strategy have to be fixed. Aetius would like to direct immediately towards Burdigala, because the capture of Visigoths’ Capital can give a deadly blow to their mood. Someone else would prefer to capture all others Visigoths’ towns in Iberia
    …someone else…? “ interrupted Valentinianus
…someone… supporting the rebirth of the Empire had some concerns in Iberia… metal concerns I mean, that they would like to get back. It would be useful and really appreciated by them. If I’m allowed… – and once get the agreement by Valentinianus – while sending the reinforcements and new troops asked by Aetius and complete the training of Secunda Aquila, we can look the developments of the situation and then decide the better strategy…
Agreed “ was the reply of Valentinianus

    GALLIA LUGDUNENSIS – 436AD

Domitius, take the fastest horse and go to announce that we have chased away the Franks… The walls are strong and our people given to defence, but we need help quickly. Maybe the Franks will react slowly, but we are not soldiers, we need the Legions… I know that Aetius is around Burdigala; ride quickly toward him. He knows what to do…
In the meantime another man is riding fast, but directed to Rome; thank to good relay stations net, he find fresh horses to continue his race and after few days he can make his report to the Magister. Once listened all words, the Magister quickly goes to speak with Valentinianus:
Imperator... – said the Magister once received by Valentinanus – Soisson revolted to us, but they need help to be kept…
Great! But how can it happens? Aetius is far aw… it seems that not only Legions are useful to capture towns… Maybe someone acted to remember them that they are Romans… Well done Magister! But now we have to fix the strategy by those last news…
I agree with you that Iberia can wait… Better to siege Burdigala, to keep Aetius closer and allow him to operate quickly to help Soisson if Franks will attack. I suggest to direct Secunda Aquila to Arles, to eventually help guarding reactions from Visigoths. I only hope that carthage can wait the training of a third legion…
I agree! As the best counsellor, you read in my mind Magister “ said Valentinianus
At your service Imperator “ replied the Magister going out.
    Valentinianus stays thoughtful:
It would be better to start to become more and more free from this men… power and ambition could become too dangerous for me
The same night a man rides towards Burdigala, and once joined Aetius camp, he give the new order to the Praefectus. Once the messenger is retired, Aetius address to Ricimer:
I know that you are a man of the Magister. But what do you think should have to be done? Quickly attack Burdigala, capture it losing many men, because very well defended, and then go to help Soisson with not full stack legion? Or wait till the Visigoths inside Burdigala prostrated by the siege make a sortie, defeat them getting lower losses and then go to Soisson?
Praefectus – replied Ricimer – what the messenger doesn’t know is that even Franks are in war with XXX. They don’t have many soldiers to send to Soisson and to enlist a new army enough strong it takes time… Soisson have strong walls and even not defended by trained garrison, by the way many of its citizen are veterans now retired…
Understood Ricimer. I think that even spread the news that we are approaching together with a second legion could be helpful… maybe little, but anyway useful…

    AQUITANIA – 436AD
The siege of Burdigala is proceeding. Aetius knowing that a fullstack army is inside and underestimating the Visigoths this time, reduced the patrols around. Suddenly, early in the morning, the alarm resound:
    The Visigoths! They are coming…
Immediately all soldiers run out from the tent, lining up outside the camp. In the mean time the Visigoths come out Burdigala.

    Aetius harangues the troops:
Legionarios! Despite the incoming Visigoths… “army” is ridiculous, the Visigoths coming out from Burdigala are a different tasks. We have the opportunity to end the siege of Burdigala with a field battle. I am expecting that you will destroy them. Killing every enemy, will allow us to rest in the town this night. So fight bravely and don’t let no one escape!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

While Equites Sagittarii are sent to take care of the “incoming army”, the Roman army is line up. Legio Lanciarii to hold the center. Comitatenses at the flanks to face the attack, with on the rear by Palatina to counterattack the enemy’s wings, both supported by Sarmatian Auxilia to give the additional blow, and allowing to surround the enemy.

The Visigoths run untidily down the hill, while Prima Aquila stays firm.
The impact is strong, but Lanciarii and Comitatenses hold the line. Aetius notice that the first line of Visigoths is made by poor Peasants, while Visigoths Warriors and Spearmen arrive to give the second hammer’s blow.

Aetius, noticng the danger, run along all the front shouting orders:

Legionarios… you behind the two first lines… launch your javelins and pilum to the incoming Visigoths.
Looking that the Equites Sagittarii are coming, after killing the incoming army:
Sagittarii on the flanks… your main objective is their cavalry… I want a shower of arrows over them…
While the first two lines fight with swords, the others two launch javelins and pilums.

Many holes within the incoming Visigoths lines, but not enough to stop their impetus.
Like one men the first line of Visigoths retreats, hoping to drag out the Romans soldiers, breaking their lines.

But the discipline of the Prima Auila is stronger, and they stay firm in their position, waiting for the impact of the attack of Visigoths Warriors and Spearmen.
Even nn the left wing the Visigoths Cavalry, made by Moorish Raiders Mercenaries, are trying to drag out the Comitatenses, breaking their lines.

But the strong voice of Aetius, just behind them:
Comitatenses… don’t’ move… don’t follow them or you will be lost… Let me take care of those Mercenaries. Sarmatians… CHARGE…!

Overcoming the lines of Palatina and Comitatenses, the Romans cavalry charge the Moorish Mercenaries, breaking easily their lines and obliging them to retreat.
But the main effort of Visigoths’ attacks on the right wing of the Romans battle line. All Visigoths’ Cavalry is concentrated there and they are pushing strongly the Romans soldiers. The Romans cavalry counterattack, trying to lighten the pressure.

But they are alone, even because the Comitatenses and Palatina of the right wing are heavily faced by Visigoths Infantry and they don’t succeed to break down.
On the left wing of Romans battle line the cavalry, leaded by Aetius himself, break down the Visigoths lines

Moorish Mercenaries, Archers, Infantry troops are retreating, leaving the left part of the battle field open. Aetius, looking the enemy escaping, give quickly orders:
Comitatenses… Palatina… it’s time to develop our tactics. Advance and attack on the flanks and on the rear the Visigoths. Our right wing needs your help… there the fight is heavy, but your comrade are bravely holding the line. Run my Legionarios…
On right wing the Visigoths focus their attack, launching all available soldiers, to break the Romans lines.

The space to fight is small, hindering all fighters to handle the swords right. The shields pushes each other strongly, everybody can see the white of the eyes of the enemy in front. Even the attack by Palatina find strong endurance by Visigoths.
Then a warcry, stronger than the clamour of the battle, fill the air.

For a second everything seems to stop. The Visigoths notice that they are Romans, and the fear start to rise from their heart. They feel the trap, and their warrior impetuosity start to fall down. The Romans feels that they comrades are coming to help.
They see that they are the Comitatenses and Palatina of the left wing, that comes to attack from the flank and the rear, to trap the Visigoths inside, preventing any escape. The Romans soldiers encouraged by the coming soldiers, feels new energy and their fight increase in power and impetuosity. Aetius coming back from the pursuit of the routing enemies:

Legionarios. Tighten you lines and prepare yourselves to attack and press on the Visigoths. Their surrounding is almost complete and their end is close. A last effort my Legionarios and the victory will be ours.
The training and discipline of the Romans soldier at the end succeed: the Visigoths start to draw back, slowly but constantly.

They hear that the clamour of the fight on their flank is approaching, that their lines are close to collapse. In the meantime, Veduc, the Visigoths Army Leader sees the trap that is closing around his army. The Visigoths suffered heavy losses already, but now the risk is to be completely annihilated.
Veduc orders the retreat for the Visigoths.

Quickly Visigoths run away, just few moments before to be surrounded by Romans troops. Burdigala is closer, and even if tired as the Romans, the hope to save their lives, double the speed of their retreat.

Aetius looking at the Romans soldiers, sees their tiredness and even if unwillingly order to stop the pursuit, leaving the few Visigoths escaped to take refuge inside Burdigala.

Legionarios. You fought bravely, but I am not completely satisfied. With a faster manoeuvre the Visigoths would have been completely surrounded, no one would be escaped, leaving Burdiala’s gates open for us. I know that the fight was heavy, but you are Romans Legionarios and they are Barbarians. Now back to our camp. We must rest, because tomorrow the walls of Burdigala will wait us…
