    No really.

Playing as Brutii, sieging a Julii city (their capital no less) and they've got about 1000 men inside. First turn they send another stack of about 1000. Both are pre-marius and have no generals. As one would expect, I slaughtered all of them. Heroic victory, another win for an awesome general and a brand new city. Or so I thought. When I get the choice to Occupy, Enslave or Exterminate, the second I pick a choice the game crashes. Which is annoying. A few hours later I had another go. Same result, then to the city options. This time I tried to save the game before choosing. As I make the save, the game crashes.

The AI is playing dirty and I don't like it.

In all the experience no doubt on this forum, does anyone know how to deal with this?

in soviet russia, city sieges you!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
try to lose to the ai, on the battlefield i mean, see if it makes any difference, or maybe go back to the second most recent save and play from there.

An update on the situation, I tried using the show_err, although I always thought it was -show_err. Either way, there was no explanation.

I resolved the issue by not sieging the city. The AI still attacked. Next turn the city was empty, so it was like taking it during their turn, but no crash. So yay for me. I also attacked a city further up. That time when I won during their turn I got the city. So yeah, still have no idea what causes this.

You are quite correct, it is -show_err.

Quite a few people seem to have a problem with this. It's not the AI playing dirty, just probably a tiny glitch in one of your files or something. A way to find whats wrong is using the "show_err" switch. This is what you do:

    - Right click on your shortcut to RTW
    - Click on properties
    - Find the line called "Target". It should say something like "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe"
    - At the end of that line, outside the speech marks write this in: show_err
    - Make sure there is a space between the last speech mark in Target, and the show_err
    - Click Apply, then Ok, then start up the game
    - Play the battle, and do the Settlement options thing again
    - If it crashes, there should be a little window after the crash saying what's wrong

Yes, this happened to me often (never in vanilla though); it seems this is connected with destroying a faction.

As for dealing with it...well, except for the last time this happened, I dealt with it by not destroying the faction in question With only one city and no army, they're usually pretty harmless

Thats the settlement capture bug. If you take a city on the AI's turn (if they sally, or bring in a reinforcing stack and you annihilate the garrison) it stands a chance of crashing. I'm no tech guy, so I can't tell you why, but AFAIK, its fairly common, although more so in mods than vanilla. To gt around it, just don't competely destroy the garrison.

In other places that's known as the 'reinforcement CTD'.

I've also heard that, in any case its annoying as hell, I've had on more than one occasion, and its basically the only bug that plagues XGM...
