You are correct, I do believe one of the previous "Emporers" gifted the pope the Papal states, maybe thats why they refer to themselves as "Holy"
And as far as I'm concerned an Empire is multiple/several nations under 1 nations rule, such as Macedon with Persia (Alexander the Great)

Wasn't charlemagne french? Just want to add on that the empire part comes from who rules them a emporer! See kingdom is ruled by a king hence the names

well i did a wikipedia search for it and apparently "charlemagne" is old french for charles the great... he got his name (charles) from this grandfather charles martel
