hmm i like to do it every now and then, ofc not when i'm near them like venice or someone. It is fun watching them just destroy milan. But when i don't, i have intentions of taking over italy very soon, so why add fire to the flames?

So i guess it could be helpful both ways, if you're getting attacked by milan or any of the other ones near them then sure it'll help. if you need your rep and favor up then go for it. Otherwise it's pretty pointless

I tend just to cripple to Papacy and leave them be. Capture Rhodes and completely exterminate it, and destroy everything. Then give it to the Papacy, making sure you have a diplomat on the island. Then, take Rome, making sure you kill the Pope in the process if your a Catholic faction. Then, immediatly bargain a ceasfire. With just crappy Rhodes they should accept. Then just leave em there, and they won't do anything. Don't really want someone becoming a major power if they can excommunicate you.

In my games though the Papacy always seems to take Florence. In SS Bologna tends to rebel then they take that aswel. Then, if Sicily / Genoa becomes idiots and attacks them, the Papacy maim them then go berserk on the world. They don't need provinces gifted to them and they still go berserk.

I can never get the SPQR to accept terriotry as a Roman or another faction, But the with pope its easy and fun to watch him grow and excomunate everyone.

Gotta try this out, thanks. Next time some faction is kicking my butt I'm gonna give my bordering settlement to the papal states and see what happens.

Having a bloodthirsty Pope is win. One time as Venice I took out Sicily and Byzantium, then gave all of Italy (except Venice) to the Pope. He went berserk and crushed Milan in only a handful of turns, then took off after France and left them with about 2 territories before he turned his attention to the HRE, who were my allies. So then, considering I was his favorite, I sent over a sizable stack to hover around the German capital to prevent the Pope from attacking. But he did anyway!

So then me, the HRE, France and England formed an unholy alliance and drove back those corrupt holy warriors. And it was pretty darn hard, I must say (Swiss & Papal Guard = melee rape). It was one of the most exciting campaigns I ever had.

ill use regions as buffers i.e. russia/poland from the mongols and when around rome on any total war game, ill just wait for the region army to distance its self away from the town before walking in and sacking it. With HRE on my last campagn, rome had not 1 stack within the town so i literaly just walked in and took it.

In most cases, When im on a crusade, I capture Antioch and give it to the Papal States. In Rome, I give em anything outside the Italian penisula and watch my baby grow.

I usually give them large portions of the holy land. It saves me from a lot of anoying crusades.

currently during my (easy) byz campagn, they kept starting crusades on toulous when france was holding it. im destroying the islamic factions yet this is the worse i ever saw the christian ai perform. they are butchering each other while i hold back on venician borders with my hungarian allies.

Check your rep with the Pope before and after giving him a territory. I have had it go down a couple of notches at times; then doing the same thing the next turn instead had it go up.

The weirdest one I ever had was a vanilla Milan game. I took Venice within about 3 turns then proceeded to murder Sicily before they found their footing. That got me excommed, so I thought "what the hell" and took Rome. Eventually after tiring of killing 3 popes I took Ajaccio, exterimated it and then gave it to him, then eventually got a ceasefire and reconcilliation.

Needless to say I thought that had screwed the Papacy. I proceeded over the next hundred or so turns to take all of Europe, Russia and North-West Africa. Then when I hit Egypt everything went weird. The Pope had Cairo, Alexandria, and Gaza, and was blitzing the Eygptians.

And they mounted all this from a 500 population motte & bailey and 3 spear militias.
