Default Attack on American consulate in Istanbul

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Un...stanbul_attack

The 2008 United States consulate in Istanbul attack was, unlike the attack on embassies in the recent past, a result of gunfire on the consulate resulting in six casualties; of which three were gunmen, and three police officers. The attack was carried out by four unknown gunmen. It occurred on July 9, 2008 in the morning hours, at a time when the embassy is at full function and an attack is most likely to cause more casualties. While the death toll was not high, this was just another sign of the dangers diplomatic missions face in the light of the previous day's bombing in Kabul. Indeed the need for adhering to the Vienna Convention on diplomatice protocal bears more relevance as it is on the host state to take care of security as per Article 30 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.[3] In this regard, Turkish security services carried out their task in minimizing the possibility of more casualities and guarded the consulate as per their conventional obligations.
It seems its just gotten more dangerous to be a diplomat in muslim countries. I wonder whats the motivation for the attack?

I dont see the big deal, this has happened before. The turkish police did their job and will crack down quicker and better next time.

whoever carried out these attacks is not doing themselves any favors by murdering turks as well as americans, theyll just draw those two peoples and countries together as people tend to do when threatened by a mutual enemy.

LOL it wouldent surprise me if we paid some men to attack our consulate so we could go to war against turkey next, like we paid and trained bin laden...oh well. :hmmm:

I don't think so, and we helped the Afghanis and Osamabomba Bin Laden the Lantern of the Light of the World to fight against the Soviets, not against us, so you are wrong in your analogy here.

I think neo-cons must be the most misunderstood group in history, Maybe zionism ranks slightly higher but im not sure. People have changed once noble concepts and twisted them, While the same innate concept remains the same in the people practicing them, its a twist as the opposite usually happens.

Definitely agree, though it tends to be some of the same people doing it to both. I think that's been over for a few years though, hopefully American politics is getting a little more open minded through all the elections we're having.

Man ordered held over consulate attack in Turkey
    13 Jul 2008 16:52:22 GMT
    Source: Reuters
ISTANBUL, July 13 (Reuters) - A Turkish court on Sunday ordered a man to be held in custody over an attack on the U.S. consulate in Istanbul in which six people were killed, the state-run Anatolian news agency reported.

The court ordered that the man, identified only as Dursun P., be held on suspicion of belonging to a terrorist group while prosecutors continued questioning nine other people and prepared an indictment.

Two people were released but might still face prosecution, Anatolian said.

The suspects were being questioned about Wednesday's attack in which three police officers and three attackers were killed when gunmen opened fire on security personnel at the entrance to the high-security consulate complex.

A man suspected to have driven the car used by the attackers was detained on Thursday.

Police were investigating possible al Qaeda involvement -- newspapers said the gunmen received weapons training in Afghanistan. Some security experts were sceptical about an al Qaeda link, given the small scale and amateurish nature of the attack.

Political tension has been rising in Turkey. The ruling AK Party faces a threat of being banned for alleged anti-secular activities and police are investigating a shadowy far-right group suspected of plotting a coup.

A variety of groups have carried out violent attacks in Turkey in recent years, including left-wing, Kurdish and Islamist militants.

The most serious occurred in November 2003 when 62 people were killed by Islamists who attacked two synagogues, a bank and the British consulate in Istanbul.

The U.S. consulate had been moved to a more secure location in Istanbul after the Sept. 11 al Qaeda attacks in the United States. (editing by Andrew Dobbie)
