Hi,

I'm playing medium difficulty, but hard on the AI during battles... and can I just say something? England kicks so much ass? Haha. I was playing Russia, and I won that whole thing without Russia being in the LATE GAME status... which was lame. Cause I was so waiting for their late game units to dominate the whole continent... but it wasn't even necessary. Meh.

Anyhow... so I'm England now. I was just simply attacking France slowly, gaining more and more of their cities... cause I am intimidated by their Gendarmes... as I should... so I want to annihilate them as soon as possible so I don't have to face the might of Gendarmes. I ally with Spain.

Sometime soon, HRE waged war on me. Then Denmark. Then Portugal (sailed all the way to the British Isles... which was already totally mine too soon... The Scots didn't even manage to get Iverness).

See, the thing is... I am really, really amused. I have been waging war quite slowly, obeying the pope... and I've been the nation's richest a couple of times, most powerful, etc... but I've been taking cities as much as I can without being excommunicated.

But one time I just made a mistake, and I think I got excommunicated. I got shocked. And then I looked at my cities... they're bloody fine. Oh. Perhaps cause I was using low tax rate for most of the game as soon as I've conquered Scots...

So I felt weird. Being excommunicated sort of liberated me. I took more and more cities of HRE, Denmark, Poland, Milan, and I just annihilated the whole of France. All happening so fast. Because I was excommunicated.

I think practically everybody was waging war on me.... but there was hardly any consequences. I was able to repel most of the troops. If any of my cities got taken over... I would be able to take it back the next turn.

I was giving money to the papal state every now and then before I got excommunicated... and I was gonna give more money and all that, or do whatever it took to reconcile... but as there was really no consequences of being excommunicated... I didn't give a . Eventually the pope himself pardoned me. But I still had 0 cross towards the Pope. Lol.

What the heck.

I thought the papal state's supposed to be a pain in the ass for the Catholic factions. Now it's so inconsequential, I'm lovin it.

It gets worse with the pope moreso in the lategame when your cities will have inevitable squalor, then you will see -population and happyness. Thats bad.

They called a crusade against Toulouse, which was France's. That's weird. I captured Toulouse. Then the Pope canceled the Crusade. HAHAHAHA. W00ts!

until they meet their match by fully plated Scottish Longbowmen (France), who are also exceptionally good and can be recruited in towns.

vanilla ai is really really easy, and in medium difficulty is even more passive ...
try playing a mod if you want a more interesting game

most people worth their salt can complete their long campaign goals before the mongols arrive

and yes england spamming longbowmen can pretty much own everything, but as for france you shouldnt really be afraid of them since the english army is "designed" to counter the french in every aspect

you have rows upon rows of armor chewing-spearwalling troops (billmen), the most accurate vs troops siege engine (mortar) and the best archers (ap, long range, fast rate and good accuracy) that can lay down stakes ... the french cant really touch you

If want a good challenge in Vanilla, play HRE on VH/VH, I manage to have almost every European country declaring war on me and excommunicated by Pope by 20th turn. All the while I really didnt do anything aggressive.

You are right to kill France quickly, once they get to Late, they get a really formidable line up. They have Scots Guards (Armoured Longbowmen) Aventurer (Armoured Crossbowmen) Lancer (Best Cav ever) Pikes and Basilisk. All these things give me a headache (well, on VH/VH with Retro Fit mod atleast.)

You must be playing vanilla then. Try some of the mods. On VH/VH.

Longbowmen are obsolete to my Janissary bowmen and Naffatun troops. How can you not love a fiery chemical death or repeated crossbow volleys?

I've already owned England on SS. It's strange, though, to see my empire so split up. I've got all of Russia under my control as well as Africa and the Middle-East, but I've got this tiny little island and its sister (Dublin) to contend with, too.
