Rise of Bosporus - An AAR of Bosporan Campaign

The Bosporan kingdom or the Kingdom of the Cimmerian Bosporus was an ancient state, located in eastern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula on the shores of the Cimmerian Bosporus (see Strait of Kerch). It is interesting as the first truly 'Hellenistic' state - in the sense of one in which a mixed population adopted the Greek language and civilization.

It's nearly 60 years since the leader of our tribe, Zipoetes, seized the thone of Bosporan kingdom. We have been waiting, watching, and planning. Now the time has come...

In the council of Bosporan kingdom:

"Sir, the chieftain of Campus Scythii has rejected all our medicines, saying he cannot accept the aids from a half sarmatian.", said by the messenger

"Old fool, does he think he can still stand against Thracians one more time?!"

"Should we send armies? Haven't we just recruited some scythian nobles?"

Haldita, heir of the kingdom, entered the council and spoke:
"Father, there is no more time, we must act now, or never!"

"It seems...", the king sighed, "Assemble The Army!"

In the room of prince Haldita, the captain of his bodyguard unit, Idanthyrsus, greeted:

"Congratulations my lord! It works sooner than expected!"

"True, but now we must win - or die."

"Is this not intended in your plan??"

"I didn't spread plagues to Campus Scythii. They are our walls against nasty dacians and germans. It must be Thracian spies..."

"So", the captain asked, "When and where?"

"Pharnacia, when their sick general dies or the plague ends. "
"One unit of onagers, 3,000 archers from scythian and sarmatian nobles, and as many as levy infantry you can get."

"Shouldn't we bring more nobles? The levy spearmen are no match to Seleucid Chrysaspides you know..."

"Don't worry about that. They will crumble under our 3,000 heavy cavalrymen!"

"But we do not have 3,000 cavalrymen... ?!"

"Yes we will. All of the royal families and their bodyguards will join! "
"They will join, they must. They have waited the day for so many years! They cannot miss it!"

"What if ...."

"Then they would be traitors, and we would get all their cavalry units!", Haldita smiled, "We will get them, one way or another."

"My king, the army has been prepared. Await for your order"

"Why did we recruit onager engineers?! We are not going to take any Thracian cities!"

Haldita interrupted the conversation and said "Because we are not going to fight Thracians. We're going to fight the Seleucid and take the rich trading city Pharnacia!"

"I did not give the command!!"

"It is too late to withdraw now. I have ordered the first fleet to sail out when spies reported their army vanished."

"But it's fraking Seleucid Empire! They could raise 50,000 troops in just one season! How are we supposed to fight them?!"

"Doesn't matter! As soon as we capture the city, we would get money to raise more armies and buy better equipments! The city is our first step to conquer the world!"

"It's madness! madness!"

"Well, we don't have other choice now", Haldita smiled and left to prepare the siege.

220 BC, winter, outside of Pharnacia

"Citizens of Pharnacia, Do not fear us! We are pontic greeks and friends to your ex-king Mithradates. The main armies of Seleucid has left, and we have come here to save you from tyranny! Surrender and none of you would be harmed!"

The messanger of Pharnacia replied "We thank for your help, but now the city is still garrisoned by the Hypaspists and one Hetairoi squadron, ...."

"I understand your difficulties. Just close the doors and do not aid the Seleucids. I promise none of you or your properties will be harmed."

And then, the battle begins...



To reduce any unnecessary casualties, Haldita ordered to build no towers and simply break the walls by onagers, and stone all garrison troops to death:


In the center square, the last defense of this city, Seleucid general fought bravely, but his fate had been concluded since the beginning



The first battle has been won!



The armies of Seleucid had also been located - they are on ships to Armenia! In next turn the fleets must be destroyed, or you can expect a real field battle

219 BC, summer, in the camp outside of Eupatoria:


"1 million denarii, 2 million denarii, ...", Haldita sat in the camp and counting the tax collected from Pharnacia...
"One hundred million denarii per year!! Father I told you the city is worth! It's worth everything!!"


"They have come! They have come!!", a spy rushed into the camp and spoke.

"What The ?! Armenians?? Impossible we made alliance with them yesterday!"

"No my king, the army of Seleucid Empire!"

"How can it be?! We just destroyed two of their fleets and every bastards on the ships, with all 3 generals! They should have nobody left in Antonia now!"

"I don't know, sir. They just showed up suddenly... ",
"4,000 Hypaspists, 3,000 Argyraspides, 2,500 Pheraspides, and Thorakitai and ......." (Pheraspides = elite peltast)

"Now you tell me how we are supposed to defend against them! Bribe them away?!", King Rusa shouted to Haldita, who's still counting his money....

"Kill them on battlefield, of course. Why waste our gold?? Besides, we do not really have enough amounts to bribe those rich bastards even if you want do."

"You f........."

The King was too angry to say anything else. He felt Haldita's plan is pushing the kingdom closer and closer into destruction, and the whole world is going to end...

219 BC, summer, battlefield:

Rosa spoke to his men: ""Men of Bosporus! In front of you, is the real army of migty Seleucid Empire! I would not lie to you, that they are all elites, all silver-shield bearers and the best of Diadochi troops!

I do not intend to frighten you, and I cannot promise you an easy victory. But I'm telling you that, these men, these monsters and sick bastards, are the same animals who butchered and enslaved millions of Pontic Greeks when the Mithradates' kingdom fall!! And now it is the time to revenage for our people!! Unleash your hatred! Break their shields and thrust spear onto their faces!! We must kill them!! Kill them all!!!""


The formation is made as following: Eugeneis Toxotai on the left to shoot at the unprotected right side of enemies, Bosporanoi Doryphoroi hold the center line, and cavalry units are divided into 2 groups, each stationed in the flanks. The infantry are no match to the Seleucid royal guards or phalanx units, and Rusa can only hope to kill as many enemies as possible by arrows and flamming stones.



The Seleucid army seem to have known about the intention of enemy, and they sent all units to rush to the front, before Bosporan archers and onagers did any serious killing. Now Rusa's plan has completely failed:



Seleucid sent two units of Pheraspides to outflank Bosporan spearmen, fortunately they were blocked by Basilikon Hippeis:



The center of Bosporan line was being pushed back by Seleucid silver shields and they suffered heavy casuality. But Seleucid army's flanking protection had been destroyed and their line collapsed when all 2,000 Bosporan general cavalrymen charged into their back:



The entire Seleucid army were routed!

The Hypaspists and Pheraspides are supposed to be unbreakable elites. I didn't expect a quick victory... must be the 5 generals I guess

The campaign went a bit weird... I turned on perfect_spy and found that the whole Seleucid army is composed of silver-shielded Hypaspists and Pheraspides, plus a few Toxotai Syriakoi, Kameletoxotai, and Agema - there is no more phalanx units

Too bad seleucid is almost finished. They have nothing left to fight and no money for new recruitments. Perhaps I should make AAR from ptolemaic?

Very good till now.

The way the soldiers hold the two handed Sarissa is very nice... but when routing it would look awesome if they switch to sword (as if they had droped the spears).
