Rome Total War wont finishing loading

Ive been playing RTW for a while and there have been a few minor bugs which i have been ignoring i.e. the battle map and actual battles have been running too quickly. However, the last time i played it crashed after i finished and battle and now it wont load

What it does now is get to the screen were there is a quote and a loading bar before the menu, and then the progress bar just grows until it hits the side of the page, then it just sits there and doesnt load.

I have always been playing on v1.5 and i tried to reinstall it and patch it straight away but it does exactly the same thing

Also i have XP, if that helps.

First of all welcome to the forum.

Make sure that you've added the -show_err switch to the end of the shortcut target to trap some errors (typically this is file missing messages). The message is usually displayed when you exit the game (even when it freezes).

I presume you've not modded the game in any way?

One thing you could try (if you've not added any units) is to lower the graphic settings of the game. I'd suggest lowering the vegetation and shadows before lowering anything else.

Also, if you post details of your PC (CPU, memory and graphics card) we may understand the problem more.

2.01 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
and a Radeon X1950 Pro

Do you have vista? I've heard that screws things up.
Also, think about other programs you might have used/installed when it started crashing.

If you have Vista and running alot of programs in the background, your memory and resources are used up before the game gets a chance.

If you've ever managed to launch the game then the settings will be in 'preferences.txt' and can be edited there.

I would take a copy of the original before doing so with screen resolutions.

Sometimes if you are forced to kill the application it may return the message trapped by the -show_err switch.

I presume you've got all the latest drivers for the PC and graphics card? When you uninstalled the game did you clear out the registry and remove all traces of the game (i.e. delete the folder)?

I am sure that I've read posts where the loading bar keeps going until it hits the right hand side of the screen. Try using the search facility for things like 'loading' or 'menu bar'. I'm afraid I can't suggest anything better than that.
