    Default Rome Resolution madness

    Hi everyone

Got a real problem here. I installed rome total war and everything was going fine (Ver 1). Decided to update, firstly ver 1.3, then ver 1.5. I am sure i did everything correctly as all you have to do is run the executible file and it does the rest, right?:hmmm:

    Here's where the fun begins!
Everything was great to begin with, then i played my first battle and noticed that the screen had moved slightly to the right (the whole screen). So that the left side was cut off. when i finished the battle, the screen was further to the right, and down a little (bottom cut off). I exited and fixed this using my NVIDIA control panal and my flat screen tv controles.

Thinking "well thats that" i went back in to rome (foolish boy!) and the same thing happened. except now its worse, now i can't get my screen back to center even using NIVDIA control and my tv display controls to max compensation. Auto ajust isn't helping either.

It now runs 960x600 and 800x600 (i guess anything ending iin 600) perfectly. but on these settings the all text on screen iis deformed so i really need to sort this out.

    a few things about spec:
my tv is an onn flatpanel using analouge VGA
    Graphics card : 64MB NIVIDIA Geforce 2
    Driver : "nv4.disp.dl" Version :6.14.0010.9371

I think thats really everything relevant. Oh yeah! "target resolution" would be 1024x768 pixels. And i think the problem was due to the fact that campeign was on 1024x768 but battle was 800x600. that seem likely?

Please get back soon, missing 1/3 of my screen is really driving me insane!!

    thanks!

    Love

Campaign and battle resolution should be the same in my opinion. Why play pc games on tv?

I've always been under the impression that the resolution should always be the same for the strategy and battle maps. I believe that if they are different then 'problems' occur - I am not sure what those problems are as I've never tried that.

Unless your TV is HD compatible then I see no advantage of using it. Unless you don't have a monitor for your computer. The lower resolution on TVs does not compensate for the larger screen (in my opinion).

    So, I agree with Irishron!

    Default Rome Resolution madness update!!

Hi again, thanks for your input! Things have now got more interesting

I use my tv cause there's no space in my room for both a tv and moniter. I donno if my tv's HD or not. but so far i've found the quality to be to my satisfaction (bar the whole rome thing)

Well i uninstalled rome. Before reinstalling I deleted everything 'left behind'' in the rome folder (save games and all ). When i re-installed from my CD (Version 1). Everything worked! I exited and updated to version 1.3 then played through the prolouge - Everything worked!

I exited and updated to Version 1.5 and everything went wahoony shaped .

Now when i try to run the game all i get is a blue screen with a message (from my tv) "not supported'. I've gone through preferences.txt and both resolutions are set to 1024x768 at 32bit color. the same as my desktop resolution and it runs fine :hmmm:. how can that be.

I suppose one solution would be to re-install again then only update to 1.3, but since i had 1.5 working for ages before these problems started and because i like the updates in 1.5... i'd rather solve this problem.

    Any ideas?

If your tv says "not supported" and you can watch tv okay and play everything okay, I'd still blame it on your tv, not the game. This game was not made to be a Nintendo or a Playstation.

Your TV appears to be telling you it doesn't support 1024 x 768 resolution. This is not surprising, non-HD TVs are built for roughly VGA (640 x 480) if you're lucky.

Even if the TV is HD, to get the higher resolution, don't you need to use an HDMI cable? (I don't have HD so my knowledge here is limited.)

Anyway, you need to check what resolutions your TV supports, then make sure RTW is set to use one of them (if RTW is set too high, you can change the resolution in one of its configuration files - the one called "preferences" I think).

You list your tv as analog. HDTV is digital. Might be something to check into.

Right! its now even more interesting.

my tv is analouge i'm pretty sure, however 1024/768 by 16bit runs fine on it.
and i'm not trying to run it on a playstation... sry that post just confused me..

Anyway i have it running now - sort of.

Re-installed again and updated to 1.3 . Played the game fine. Went to bed.

Next day it wouldn't work and we were back to "not supported". So i opened
    C:\program files\activision\rome total war

    and deleted preferences.txt
also i deleted the prefereces.txt file in the preferences folder. Ran the game, it opened up fine, set my video preffs. Played fine.

next time it didn't work, and i had to delete preferences.txt again. Now i'm deleting it everytime before i run the game and then setting video opitions before playing (from the main menu, before loading my game). if i set them in-game it goes back to "not supported" ; even if i just change like the troop detail setting.

    Most strange no?
I'm considering updating to 1.5 and seeing if it works using this method.:hmmm:

what do you all think of that?
