Whats a good deathmatch shooter that is actually active? Seems these types of games now a days are flavor of the month, and I HATE playing team based shooters with people i don't know.

As always, Call of Duty is a big one, but it can get tiring. Theres always the twitchfest that is CS. Battlefield 1942 and SW Battlefront are still fairly popular and enjoyable, along with TF.

CS isn't THAT twitch. I've played FAR worse than that as far as that is concerned.
The only reason I dont play that game is that nobody I know wants to play it and the only fun I can have in it is doing scrims or cal. I would join some random nubs but trying to join a cal-o clan but when 90% of them are run by 14 year olds or just general dumbases it gets too annoying to be worth the effort.
I had a lot of fun WAYYYY back in the day playing the original Quake. I could just jump in the game to have fun plus there were tons of mods to give me some variety. I'm looking for something more like that.
Is Quake 4 or UT3 any good? Or are they basically dead online like UT2k4 was the last time i played it (before UT3 was out).

Q4 is dead, the game phase was way to slow so it never got any popular. The only people who play it are people who refuse to realize the truth their favorite game sucks. Like with BF2.
Thats sad, games like Quake used to be very popular and I enjoyed them quite a bit. Do you know how UT3 is by any chance?

I am not an active UT player. But being that the game is rather new and has sold 1million copies + I am pretty sure it will be a fair amount of people playing.
UT3 is basically UT2K with better graphics and hoverboards. The only problem is the UT2K single player is way different. I liked UT2K's cause it was the actual tournament, and they should've expanded on that. In UT3, you're a guy named Reaper in the middle of the Necris Invasion and you're basically out to kick some ass. It follows a campaign map that is pretty straigh on linear, although what is interesting at some points you can choose between 2 maps and it'll affect the next battle. i.e. the enemy you're currently fighting might have more troops at Site A rather than Site B, and Site B happens to be a valuable factory so you take that motha down and Site A may get weakened. Also you get 'cards' that you can use between battles. They'll give you reinforcements, remove the enemies etc. The story is fantastic too.
The multiplayer is entirely unchanged, cept for the hoverboards like I said, and Warfare has a new feature with 'orbs'. If you take your teams orb, and run to a neutral or enemy node, it automatically turns to yours. Both sides have one orb and it regenerates roughly every 30-60 seconds. It can be destroyed if someone takes it then that guy dies and no one picks it up for 30 seconds, or you can blow up an enemies orb by clicking on it, but it kills you in the process.
Also theres a nifty character creation system, it's not too indepth but it lets you customize everything you want. Headgear, pauldrons, torso armor, hands, legs and boots and armor style.
Alot of people said they were angry at UT3 because it didn't really make UT any better but I dont mind that since UT isING AWESOME!

Do a lot of people still play and are there still a lot of active servers for it?
edit: nice I can get it on steam that is a plus for me.

Yeah, I can usually find one pretty easily.

but if you liked unreal tournament and stuff maybe day of defeat is better - its faster
You guys keep listing off squad games.
Where is my Q3A? My HLDM? What happened to all the Deathmatch games. They use to be fun but then they tried to make them too much like Counter-Strike and Rainbow Six....
In addition to the advice here try looking into some coop games, yes it's "noobish" but I've had a surprising amount of fun playing coop games over the years. There's a free mod for Half Life 2 called Synergy that is worth checking out.
And yes the proper deathmatch games aren't so popular, I can understand it because when team based mods first came out - like the original team fortress for Quakeworld - people went crazy for them. It adds a little bit extra and it's tough for new players to get to a decent level in games that have been going for years and years and have a mainly "hard core" of very skilled players left. People get pasted and log off to play something less brutal.

"If we didn't have cruxifixion, this country'd be in a right bloody mess"
Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament (the Real one) are quite active
But especially UTs pace is something you have to cope with when u played slower games, even UT2003/4 and so on (which are crap btw)
Played UT some weeks ago and had to stop it after a few hours when my head almost exploded...
Quake 3 is a evergeen and great fun...
I got UT3 and it s INSANELY fast however I got used to it quickly. I don't remember 2k4 being like this but I may be wrong since i havn't played it in years.

Yeah, it is pretty fast. My only problem is the people online who think skill=jumping around really fast with flak cannons and rocket launchers.

COD4 has a ton of people on but the grenades can get annoying after a while...I recently got TF2 and it has quite a healthy population. I'd assume BF2 still has a large player base but I haven't been on there in about a year.
