Remember back in the day, not so long ago, when large companies with budgets OTHER than Bioware made many successful attempts at RPGs for PC?

I am a fan of JRPGs... you have to be these days... and we still get those, sure, but nothing beats a PC style non-linear RPG for me. Not games like Oblivion which are just open ended single-player mmorpgs, i'm talking about games with conversations, a game with choices, maybe even tactical gameplay with a party of NPCs, etc. Like Ultima 7, Baldurs Gate 2, Gold Box....

I want more RPGs! Its sad when the only way I can get my RPG fix is by buying games for PS2 or Xbox 360..... or playing old games or NWN modules, when will it end!?

I'm HOPING since they changed the game completely that it will be more like Deus Ex and less like Oblivion.

Out of fallout i expect great player-npc interaction which Bethesda's other games lack. I'm already disappointed that its not a 3rd person RPG but i'm willing to live with that if done well.

Its just annoying that Fallout 3 is like the ONLY game to look forward to. Sure there is Mass effect 2 but that is probably next year and 1 good rpg a year is not at all enough.

yeah and they are working on all the mass effects at once -- there should be a 2nd and a 3rd out within a couple of years

yeah JRPGs are inferior in everyway to real RPGs like my man tisch mentioned above-- though I would remove the gothic and go with baldurs gate 1 an 2

Yeah there is a lack of RPGs out there and every such list boils down to suggesting "have you played latest popular RPG yet?".

When Diablo 3 is considered RPG, it's sad. It will be a good hack and slash but different from the classical RPGs.

I cope with playing strategy games and yes, jRPGs. The best I've played are Dragon Quest (any of them), Xenogears(for the story mainly), Star Ocean 2(battles and item making goodness) and Persona 3 because it's so different.
There are good jRPGs out there but I guess not everyone loves them. You have to take the whole experience and then judge it. For example Dragon Quest has this amazing ability to surprise you every 10 hours or so. Whenever it feels boring, something new happens. Dragon Quest to me stands right near the other RPGs like Baldur's Gate or Diablo. It's almost as addicting as Diablo.
Best of all, Dragon Quest 4,5 & 6 will all see the light on the DS, best freaking news ever. Oh and Dragon Quest 9 of course.

Actually try Temple of Elemental Evil if you haven't already, it isn't talked about often but it was made by Troika and it's the best fighting system of any computer D&D game, ever. It has good graphics too, but it's mostly a dungeon crawler.

Oh and Wizards and Warriors, it was released circa 2000-2002, and it was made by the guy who made Wizardry 8. It's old school like that and it's pretty good, you probably haven't heard of it.

So true,but there still are some of those,imo they just don't cut it anymore though, and I don't know if it's me or if the games just plain suck.

-There's NWN 1+2(booooring)
-The Witcher (never got into that one)
-Kotor 1+2 (I do so hate star wars...)and Mass effect (...and sci fi in general)
-the Gothic Series (first part was great,second part was okay,third part...sucked)
-Morrowind and Oblivion (dull,generic,boring)

So far the transition of good pc RPG's to 3d for the most part has failed miserably,the sole and glorious exception -for me- being VtM:Bloodlines (I also liked the first VtM-game) and it was buggy as hell.

I really fear Fallout 3 will be like Oblivion with guns, I had high hopes for Dragon Age but there's no news on that front other than that it's official name is "Dragon Age: Origins" now.

In germany this game will be released on the 4th of August, so far it has gotten very positive (p)reviews...which game doesn't though.Maybe and just maybe this one will fail to disappoint for once (although I've never been a fan of the pen&paper rpg it's based on).

You don't have to fear, it will be...that really sucks.

The only RPG i have hopes in right now is The Dark Eye: Drakensang, but my hopes in it decrease the more information about it gets leaked.

But Bathesda will definitly kill the Fallout-Series

And Diablo, no matter which one, will never be an RPG, just like WoW will never be an MMORPG !

nwn 1+2 i completely agree, boring npcs story doesnt really drag you into the thing

witcher - i loved to play this game i think its great, i ll beat it again once the polished version is out. but its not really a rpg its more like a action adventure with the only rpg element being the char development, although u can make choices in the game that alter the storyline a bit - at least

on all the other games u mentioned i completely agree. hell last winter i almost installed baldursgate 1 + expansion and 2 + expansion again. even though i beat those games like 8 years ago

th kotor games won awards i think they did suck as well - or maybe i am not enough into starwars. but the npc dialogs were so dull and uncharismatic.

well i have high hopes for that game but i am scared to be disappointed, same with fallout3

beeing a rpg fan myself i think i tried pretty much all rps except the obvious hack and slash pointing finger workout trainers.
and there was nothing remotely exiting as BG1+BG2 acually - nothing i couls recomemnd.

i think the consoles and the action adventure genre with rpg elements destroyed the rpg genre.

No its Bioware game and slanted to be atleast according to what info exist the spiritual successor to BG franchise...Bioware has been too tight lipped about it but atleast we'll get some info today.

Hope they live up to their past efforts cause BG2 really is the standard by which rpgs should be judged. Main thing Bio has said is that DA will be a true rpg it wont have the action elements of Mass Effect, Jade Empire etc.

The DSA/The Black Eye game you mean is called "Drakensang", similiar but not the same

i loved those old DSA game, i beat Shadows over Riva every now and then, great game...

I agree somewhat, nothing even comes CLOSE to Baldurs Gate 2....

When the games are attempted they are not as good as the ones in the past.

I've played Gothic, and some of these other games.... they are still few and far between.

Also Diablo 3 isn't what i'm looking for in terms of a RPG, I consider that to be a straight action game more like a shooter. Though still good it wouldn't solve my RPG withdrawls.

I have, I would like to see more games like that except both finished and long. The concepts of that game though would make for a great RPG for me. I blame the games faults on Atari and their impatience to wait for games to be completed.

I actually agree with this somewhat. Though I like Bioware's games it seems that overall quality, length of gameplay, and the number of games have ALL decreased.

I always have been one who wished that Bioware kept a small studio just to make infinity engine games even until this day.

The newest Suikoden game was good as well, you should try that. One of the few JRPGs that is like a classic computer RPG.

Yes. It's probably gonna be classic Bethesda style which is, mostly play in 1st person but if you're feeling crazy and have a death wish, try to bumble around in 3rd person for a while. I think they said they want to make 3rd more important than it was in Oblivion but..we'll see how that goes.

BTW, have you tried Freedom Force? It's more of a tactical RPG but it was made by Irrational (SS2, KOTOR2, NWN 2 etc)

Also this website, http://www.gamebanshee.com/ it has great guides for a lot of the cRPGs out there. The next 12 months also look very promising for RPGs.

Seriously why the hell does everyone call the Balders Gate games great RPGs what makes them so special? I've played and beaten both of them they have nice stories but they're incredibly boring gameplay wise if you play for more than an hour or two at a time. (I played both of them when they were new even then I felt the same)

They are boring gameplay wise if you give AI control and leave the game on autopilot. I never heard that description of the gameplay before so i assume that is what you did.

They have a great story, wide array of plots, different types of characters, REAL differences in the game depending on choices you make. All the things that make a RPG great. Even the characters in your party interacted heavily with eachother and it was done well unlike Bioware's later games where they would just argue about choices. Hell its even the only RPG i played that had decent puzzles and one of the few with good voice acting and good non-cliche dialogue.
