Supposedly there are also glassy craters in the Sahara and other large deserts where Meteorites have crashed and melted the sand.
its the same with lightning, when lightning hits the sand it forms fulgurites (looks like glass roots)

The lightning glass stuff is pretty cool. There was a movie where one of the characters owned a shop that sold that kind of stuff. I totally forget the movie's name right now...but in any case there were lots of examples of it.
