To anyone who is not a native English speaker, how much can you understand?
Is this equivalent to the distance between Spanish and Portuguese? What is the equivalent distance in your language?

This is really interesting and I am somewhat surprised that I have never heard of the Yola language before. I could understand very little by audio only, although having some familiarity with other Germanic languages and various stages of English (Anglo-Saxon and Early Modern English) helped out a little with the written form. Still, a very unusual language form.

Comparing the spoken and written language with the english reference text in the video the distance to modern english seems to be similar to the distance between dutch and german - written down many words look similar or work by association, but spoken there are more differing phonetic conventions. I guess that is the usual way with related languages as spoken language evolves faster than written.
