    Default lousy performance on RTW

I have a system than can max medieval total war at 1600x1200 with no lag and for some reason maxing Romes specs in a battle with over about 2500 soliders causes insane lag Lowering settings like high quality shadows even tho this card should be able to kick rtw's butt doesn't help

E2160 1.7ghz core 2 duo (It was cheap and i needed a new cpu fast I will be getting a 8400 but it really shouldn't matter)
    2gb Kingston 667 value ram
    Xpertvision 8800gt
    500gb and 250gb SATA.

I have the latest Forceware 175.16
    Latest DirectX
    WinXP pro sp2

I tried removing directX since i seemed to be having trouble with it as games kept installing over the top of it no matter what version it was so I used a removal tool which wrecked it so i couldn't install any DX so I had to reinstall windows but it still has the same horrible performance.

Does the lag only occur during the battles, or does it happen on the campaign map too?

Do you by any chance have your 8800gt overclocked?

You could also try lowering things like unit detail, grass detail and stuff like that. Also, you can go into the preferences file, and take out all the unit arrows and stuff, should help a bit.

I shouldn't have to do that when I can run m2tw maxed And the lag only happens during battles. Sorry about putting this in the wrong forum.

    I don't have anything overclocked.

Maybe your computer has too much stuff on hard drive? Try deleting unnecessary stuff from your computer, and then reinstall RTW. You might have to uninstall M2TW for a while, I think.
That shoudl help, it worked for me.

What processes are running in the background? (Antivirus, 3rd party, etc.)

I have the 8600 and have no problems with Rome. The 8600 and 8800 are similar enough that there shouldn't be any issues with that.

Your processor should be fine, but it's probably the weak point on your rig. Are you sure your RAM is properly clocked for your motherboard? Do any other games run slowly?

Sometimes one detail can have issues with support. It might take a lot of your time, but try going through the options - turn anti-aliasing off, then try turning reflections off... At least if you find what it is you could try to fix it.

Are you running the most recent version of Rome? Did you download your motherboard's manufacturer's drivers? Your 8800's manufacturer's drivers?

I have Rome gold and I just updated DirectX again. i have no av installed yet tho i do have zone alarm firewall. I have 667mhz ram but since I get great performance on m2tw it shouldn't be a hardware problem. I always disable useless windows services and uninstall dumb software that comes with windows and turn off thinsg that start with it as well as quite a few reg hacks and other stuff to make it work how i want.

Also a 8600 isn't like a 8800 its more a HTPC card and is much weaker despite being DX10 a 7900gt beats a 8600 I think it's performance is comparable to a 7600gt. Thank you for replying anyway.

EDIT: I hav the latest mobo drivers I'm pretty sure. i always track down the best drivers for everything, benig a geek . Ill check manufacturers sites for newer ones.
